Clardy's Corner: Party Like It's 1995

On October 21, 2015, Troy is making like Marty McFly and getting into the time machine. But instead of going back to 1985, Troy has set the dial for 1995. Why?

So there I am late last Thursday afternoon before Stanford's game against UCLA, heading through Chuck Taylor Grove and minding my own business, when suddenly I hear someone calling my name. It's The Bootleg's own R.J. Abeytia, hanging out at a tailgate. I walk over and say hello. Then he brings over another tailgater and says, "hey Troy, meet Mark Butterfield."

Wait, what? The Mark Butterfield? Whoa! Man, I didn't think I had seen him since the final party at the old Delt house. It was awesome to see him again.

"Hey, Troy! How ya doin'?" The Antioch drawl was unmistakable. By the end of it all, we were trading lines from the movie "Airplane!" Good times.

And of course, we talked about 1995, his lone season as Stanford's starting quarterback. "Man, that was a fun season!" Mark reflected. "We had a good run."

It was a fun season, one of the more entertaining teams Stanford has fielded over the years. It was also 20 years ago.

Still, I can see it all now. Butterfield blossoming into one of the Pac-10's better QBs in his only chance at the starting role. Mark Harris reaching over two defenders and hauling in a touchdown on a cold night in Pullman. Mike Mitchell, Anthony Bookman, Greg Comella, and Adam Salina giving Stanford a backfield for all seasons. Kwame Ellis, Josh Madsen, and Carl Hansen coming through on defense. And a brand new head coach overseeing it all.

When Stanford hired Bill Walsh in 1992, everyone said, "wow!" When Stanford hired Tyrone Willingham to replace Walsh in December 1994, everyone said, "who?" As a result, expectations outside the program were near zero. Meanwhile, Willingham went to work, quickly establishing his no-nonsense, measured, in-control style and imprinting it on the program.

The season started well enough, as the Cardinal handled San Jose State in the opener, pulled off a last-second goal-line stand to win at Utah, then tied Wisconsin. But although Stanford was undefeated, they were still expected to get mashed in Eugene by the Oregon Ducks, fresh off their first Rose Bowl in 37 years.

That's certainly how I felt walking into Autzen Stadium that afternoon. Four hours later, I walked out of Autzen stunned. And giddy. Oregon QB Tony Graziani had thrown three first-half picks, Marlon Evans had stunned the crowd with a huge kick return TD, and Stanford had knocked off the defending Pac-10 champs, 28-21.

With the Cardinal ahead 21-14 in the fourth quarter, Butterfield threw a frozen rope to the front right corner of the end zone, where Andre Kirwan made a stretching, full-extension, near-fingertip grab with all-conference CB Alex Molden draped all over him. Touchdown, Stanford. Still one of the best catches I've ever seen in person. To this day, based on what he did in back-to-back years against the Ducks (fourth-and-12, anybody?), Kirwan still might not be allowed in Eugene.

That Oregon game was the high point. But after a win at Arizona State the following week put Stanford at 4-0-1 and in the polls, things leveled off. Two Butterfield passes clanged off Stanford receivers' chests and into Washington defenders' arms, and the Huskies spoiled the Card's return to the Farm. The next week, UCLA RB Karim Abdul-Jabbar (formerly known as Sharmon Shah) carried the ball so far (261 yards) and so often (42 times), by the fourth quarter Stanford Stadium PA announcer Gary Williams had given him a third name: "you-know-who."

The low point came two weeks later against USC. Stanford frittered away an early 16-0 lead en route to a 31-30 loss to the Trojans. That game still gives Butterfield nightmares. I still can't really talk about it, either. Google more on that game if you want to.

That loss was so tough, Tyrone Willingham saw fit to call a team meeting on the plane after it landed in San Francisco that night. Only the coaches, players, and flight crew know what was said on that plane. Meanwhile, the rest of us waited on the buses on the tarmac, passing the time by reading something called The Bootleg, some really funny sheet that some crazy guys faxed out on Fridays.

After we returned to campus, I bumped into Willingham in the halls of the still-new Arrillaga Family Sports Center. "It's all right," the always-determined coach told me. "We're still in it. If we win next week in Pullman, we'll go somewhere."

Indeed, the Cardinal won in Pullman, becoming bowl-eligible in the process. Stanford won the next week, too, pouncing on a critical fourth-quarter fumble by Tony Gonzalez, beating Cal in the Big Game, and regaining The Axe. Visions of the Aloha Bowl danced in all of our heads during that evening's various celebrations.

Instead, the bowl folks in Honolulu said aloha to UCLA, which finished a game behind the Cardinal in the Pac-12 standings. Meanwhile, Stanford was shipped out to Memphis to play in the Liberty Bowl against East Carolina.

That setting was unmemorable. The game was nearly unmentionable. East Carolina won, 19-13, thanks in part to a pick-six thrown by Butterfield. Freezing rain was falling while then-athletic director Ted Leland and I chatted before boarding the buses to head to the airport after the game. "A real shame that it had to end like this," Leland lamented.

He could have been talking about the game. He could have been talking about the fact that we were all in Memphis in the first place. Or he could have just been reflecting on the end of a fun season that had turned Stanford Football around. No matter what, he would have been right.

Tyrone Willingham's first Stanford team set the tone for his era on The Farm. His teams rarely made stupid mistakes on the field, often made Stanford fans proud, and always competed hard. Many times, they even exceeded expectations. One of his teams did play in Pasadena on New Year's Day, you'll remember.

Last week's game was entertaining as heck, but bumping into Mark Butterfield was one of the best parts of my day. After all, as cool as the present is for Stanford Football, and as bright as the immediate future appears to be, it's also fun to get little reminders that Stanford Football's past is also full of fun-to-watch teams that still resonate even now, 20 years later.

God, I'm old.

RANDOM PAC-12 THOUGHTS

Did you miss Tuesday's edition of the TreeCast podcast? In it, I explain how David Shaw changed everything...by doing nothing. Give it a listen here...

I remember Troy Walters' juggling 50-yard catch against UCLA in 1999. Teyo Johnson's one-handed snare in 2001 made Sports Illustrated. And, of course, Kodi Whitfield. What is it about Cardinal receivers making insane catches against the Bruins at Stanford Stadium? Whatever it is, I like it...

After Francis Owusu's catches for the ages, I was shocked. I think the whole stadium was, too. After the crowd's initial explosion when the play actually happened, that place seemed almost eerily quiet for about 20 minutes after that grab. Granted, it's hard to cheer when your jaw is dropped. But I also think it was hard to cheer because, suddenly, Stanford fans were trying to process where the Cardinal might possibly be able to go if they keep playing like this. A paradigm shifter, last week's win was...

Congrats to my man Kyle Peterson, now in the Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame. What a pleasure it was to watch him pitch and call his games...

Say what you want to about the fake punt the Indianapolis Colts tried to run on Sunday night, and you should. That was the worst special-teams decision in football this past weekend. A close second? Utah trying a throwback pass on a kickoff in their own end zone. Well, actually, the pass went forward. Which is illegal. And when it happens in the end zone, it's a safety. Of all the unbelievable things that happened in all of football over the weekend, that was right up there...

I mean, think about that. That safety came after Arizona State had kicked a field goal to close Utah's lead to 14-13. Suddenly, after that ill-advised play, the Sun Devils had a 15-14 lead and the ball back. What if Utah had lost that game? And the Pac-12 South? And a potential playoff berth? The Utes are very, very lucky that awful decision didn't have serious, season-altering consequences...

So Oregon State has been gutted on defense...and they bring in Gary Crowton as an offensive consultant? No, the Beavers aren't scoring enough points. But -- watching from afar, mind you -- I suspect the larger problems lie on the other side of the ball...

Think Vernon Adams makes a difference? Nice job overall by that young man against Washington...

From time to time, the Pac-12 Network goes into the vault and replays classic football games. That's all fine and dandy. But with all due respect, how did 1996 Utah-Stanford make that list? And why haven't I seen a replay of 2001 Oregon-Stanford yet?

Pac-12 Network travels will take me to the Palouse this weekend, so I won't be at Stanford Stadium for this one. That said, I need a place in Spokane to watch the game Saturday night. Any suggestions? I'll take 'em!

I hear Jim Mora and Rich Rodriguez railing against the scheduling we've seen this year (UCLA with back-to-back Thursday games, Arizona with a bushel of night kickoffs on the road). And honestly, they're not getting an argument from me...

Not a Pac-12 Thought, but... let's kill the Jim Harbaugh-to-the-Colts rumors right now. He just finished working in the NFL for an unpredictable, attention-seeking, blame-deflecting owner. Why would he do that again?

Not a Pac-12 Thought, but... Peyton Manning should have retired this past offseason. I said that back during the winter, too. I realize the Denver Broncos are 6-0. But if Peyton looks like this now, what's he going to look like in December and January?

Not a Pac-12 Thought, but... while you watched everyone struggle to find warmth at Citi Field in the NLCS over the weekend, keep this in mind: if the World Series stretches that long, Game 7 will be played in the American League city on November 4. If I'm Major League Baseball, I'm secretly hoping that game is played in Toronto, where there is a roof... (of course, the rate that series is going, that also means I'm rooting for a miracle...)

PAC-12 PICKS

Cal @ UCLA (-3.5) (Thursday). I'm getting a funny, funny feeling here that the first team to 35 points wins. I'm also getting a feeling that the Bruins will commit one turnover too many. I like Cal by 7.

Washington State @ Arizona (-7.5). I have little doubt that the Cougs can move the ball on the Wildcats. The onus, therefore, falls on Washington State's defense. Arizona will get some big plays, but will they get enough? Not quite. I like Washington State by 6.

Utah @ USC (-3.5). Wait, a top-five team is playing at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, and it's not the Trojans? It's true. For only the second time since 1998, the unranked Trojans are hosting a top-five opponent. Can Devontae Booker carry the day for the Utes again? I think so. I like Utah by 10.

Colorado @ Oregon State (-2.5). There will be better days ahead in Corvallis, but it's hard for me to pick the Beavers right now. I like Colorado by 12.

Wait a minute...I just picked all four road teams, and all four underdogs. That has to be a recipe for disaster. Right?

Last week: 4-0 (straight-up), 3-1 (ATS).

This year: 10-6 (straight-up), 10-6 (ATS).
