Opposing Views: Pac-12 Championship Game

A look across the aisle as Stanford and USC get ready for the grudge match.

Appreciate USC football’s ability to fight on and own decades of staying power. Compare it a movie character whose license plate read, “D-FENS.”

Gridlocked, polluted and racially divided Los Angeles offers the perfect setting for early-’90s turmoil in “Falling Down.” A laid-off defense contractor played by Michael Douglas, the protagonist loses ability to function in a complex world that’s passed him by. His odyssey to return home fails, but not before he treats obstacles – indifferent fast food clerks, gangbangers, a shopkeeper’s price-gouging ways – the way Willie McGinest dropped opposing ball-carriers.

Trojan football can’t relate. There are no identity crises where the uniforms still look great, the Song Girls stay fit and Hall of Famers keep courting five-star recruits. USC has evolved and maintained relevance throughout college football’s decades of change. To help explain how this program offers stability in a place where upheaval remains constant, we again called on USCFootball.com’s Dan Weber.

TheBootleg:
Explain how remarkable a job Clay Helton has done since he assumed controls from Steve Sarkisian. While Sark’s turmoil was personal, how unstable was the team he took over? A midseason coaching change points out instability among the team, but that doesn’t seem the case here. Did the change make USC more focused and driven? Of all the uncertainty and “what-ifs” he inherited, what do you consider to be his greatest feat?

Dan Weber:
Sark's turmoil was more than personal. Between the distractions in practices and games, to the players knowing something wasn't right, the team was plenty unstable. It had four days to get ready to head for Notre Dame. And after three quarters, USC was leading 31-24. That didn't hold up but the way he righted that team a week after losing to Washington at home was amazing. To now have changed the way they think about football, about who they are and what the identity of a USC football team has to be – run first, stop the run, win the turnover battle, play physical for 60 minutes – is a course-correction very few could have accomplished after taking over in mid-October. Infusing an identity into this team is Clay's greatest accomplishment with these guys. He's brought back competition and that has brought the players closer, they say.

TB: How much a survivor is USC football? I refer to its ability to thrive and adapt through the decades and in the course of college football’s various eras (the heavyweight-dominant ’70s, the changes brought by increased TV exposure, academic rules/scholarship limits of the ‘80s, the Florida/Miami/Florida State-centric ’90s, etc.). Fortune 500 companies may be scarce in the L.A. area, but USC football isn’t going anywhere. A couple bad coaching hires aside, USC seems to always be relevant. Remember the Michael Douglas character from the movie, “Falling Down,” who just wants to “go home” to a Los Angeles that no longer exists? I would consider USC the exact opposite. USC will always have a home in big-time college football. You know what I mean?

DW:
Absolutely. And the reason can be seen in the Pac-12’s All-Century Team announced Tuesday. USC produced 24 of the 50 players. No other school produced more than five. Add the coach (ED: The “anti-Card,” John McKay) and top defensive player (ED: the equally deserving Ronnie Lott). That kind of tradition doesn't go away with a couple of bad coaching hires or the ridiculous NCAA sanctions, as much as the rest of the Pac-12 used them to jump start things. USC still has more NFL Hall of Famers, more No. 1 overall picks, more overall NFL Draft picks and those 24 All-Pac-12 All-Century guys. When you combine the recruiting base with school itself (a sparkling campus you have to see to believe) that's revitalized the Figueroa Corridor and is home to the second-most international student body in the country, these things are hard to make go away. USC has a great deal going for it.

TB: Noted college football expert Bill Plaschke – the guy who once said Pete Carroll was a bad hire – called USC “flashy on offense, but flimsy on defense” following the loss to Stanford in September. How much has the defense improved since then? How would you rate its ability to stop the run and create a harassing pass rush?

DW:
With two All-Pac-12 defensive linemen in Antwaun Woods and Delvon Simmons, as well as an all-conference team featuring and Su'a Cravens, Adoree' Jackson  and Cameron Smith, (USC's fourth freshman defensive player of the year in the last five years, joining Cravens, Leonard Williams, and Dion Bailey), USC should have been far more formidable on a weekly basis . It did manage to hang in there defensively three of the last four years against Stanford. But it's a much more physical unit. The young guys in the secondary have grown up. There's a confidence level now they didn't have in Week 3. We'll see how that matters Saturday but they think they understand all the ways it went wrong for them the first time these teams played.

TB:
Beyond the coaching change, what are the areas of greatest improvement you’ve seen since USC last met the Cardinal? Are there any concerns (injuries, decline in performance by a particular player, etc.) on the roster you see now that Stanford didn’t expose in its victory?

DW:
Just owning a sense of who they are and how they win football games is the biggest improvement. This is a run-first, stop-the-run team that has guys who can make explosive plays. But they have to be relatively penalty and turnover-free to do that. We'll see about that. The turnover situation is definitely getting better (a plus-9 turnover margin) since Clay took over. Injury-wise, USC has lost All-American center Max Tuerk and valuable multi-position o-line sophomore Toa Lobendahn for the season. That hurts. And middle linebacker Cameron Smith, the Pac-12's freshman of the year on defense, was a hoss. They need to find people who can step up and step in. So far, so good (for the most part).

TB: When USC loses to Stanford, what goes through fans minds? How does the disappointment compare to Notre Dame or UCLA? Is there a sizeable chunk of the fan base that diminishes Stanford’s accomplishments because they’ve occurred while USC was on probation?

DW:
It does occur to the USC fan base that the probation and scholarship losses have hurt. But they also recall that in 2013, USC beat No. 4 Stanford at the Coliseum with 12 players on defense. They're probably still as mad as I was about the clock operator who moved the clock in mysterious ways faster when USC was losing slower after USC took the led and slower it down just enough to let Luck get the Cardinal in position for a game-winning field goal at the buzzer, or those late-game calls at the Coliseum the next year in overtime that let Luck pull another one out. But fans mostly save their negative thoughts for the NCAA, not Stanford. And yes, a win over Notre Dame probably means more to the fan base -- it is college football's greatest intersectional rivalry. And yes, a UCLA loss hurts more. But USC's fans are a pretty knowledgeable bunch and they know and respect the kind of football Stanford has been playing. Many of them wished USC wouldn't have gone away from it for a time, although scholarship numbers seemed to dictate that even if they really didn't, as it turns out.

TB: Is the officiating in that 2010 meeting really that significant? I'm sure you would agree USC has benefited from some even more dubious calls through the years:
Maybe Erik Afholter caught that ball to beat UCLA in '87? Or the "Bush Push?" And Charles White against Michigan in the Rose Bowl: A fumble so obvious, it practically invented the term, "phantom touchdown."

DW:
You have to go a long way back to find those famous calls that benefited USC and they were certainly there, although I'd dispute adding the "Bush Push" to that list. The way football is/was called, that push was permitted. But one thing that stands out since Pete Carroll arrived, and something he raised time and again with the Pac-12 and got no answer, is something that's true even this year: Pac-12 teams that play USC are the least penalized teams in the conference. Look up the stats. Now USC may be the second-most penalized team with only UCLA behind them and that's on USC. But no way can USC have an effect on whether its opponents are penalized or not. And yet there it is: If you play USC, the numbers say you will not be penalized as much as you usually are in the Pac-12. Even UCLA was flagged for barely half its season average last week. Go figure. That's what has bugged USC fans in recent years.

TB: Pat Haden: A success? A failure? Something in between? What’s the No. 1 thing missing from the discussion about the job he’s done?

DW:
Poor Pat is never going to be able to live down the Sark hire. At a time when USC was coming out of sanctions with a chance to really turn things around after what Ed Orgeron had done in replacing the midseason-fired Kiffin, Pat hired another coach with a middling record and enough personal issues to sink any program. Pretty much unforgivable to hire a guy you'd have to fire in midseason to replace another you had to fire in midseason. Not sure if that's ever happened in college football history. So as much as USC, like Stanford, performs well in the non-revenue Olympic sports, football, and to a lesser extent basketball where the jury is still out on Andy Enfield, make this tough for Pat to leave the legacy he would have wished for his alma mater.

TB:
In JuJu Smith-Schuster and Adoree Jackson, how good are these playmakers compared to the legacy (Woods, Marquise Lee, etc.) they inherited?

DW:
They're right there in the ballpark with those guys. Remember, they're both just sophomores and as much as Robert and Marqise have left their marks, they had three years to do so. Both Adoree' and JuJu have another year to get there. But they're both terrific leaders and wonderful competitors and USC is extremely fortunate they grew up a local bus ride from campus as did Robert and Marqise.

TB: The Bay Area: A great place to visit and live, or just a poor excuse for the California everyone pictures when they think of the West Coast?

DW:
USC fans love The Weekender every year coming to The City and Cal or Stanford. Coming a second time in a season isn't maybe as much of a great time so it will be interesting to see how they turn out Saturday. They probably brought 12,000 or so to Cal this year and maybe almost as many last year to Palo Alto. Both were day games, however, and much more attractive to USC fans. As to NoCal vs. SoCal, USC folks like their sun and those palm trees as a daily diet.

TB:
So will the usual 12-15k be there on Saturday?

DW:
This is new territory for USC here: The rematch. The second trip in a season to the Bay Area. And in a season of so much tumult. A week when you just hired a new coach who may not be the apple of many of the fans' eyes. There are some wait-and-see elements here for the USC fan base. The UCLA win has them pretty upbeat but it came just a week after an awful effort at Oregon. And since you can buy tickets not just through the school, the answer may have to wait until 4:45 p.m. Saturday.
