Clardy's Corner: Dear Heisman Voters...

If time heals all wounds, why is Troy more irritated now about last year's Heisman vote than he was when it happened?

September 7, 2016

Dear Heisman Voter,

Last Friday evening, I was in Eugene calling an Oregon women's soccer match for the Pac-12 Network. I missed the first half of Stanford's opener against Kansas State, but I got back to my hotel during halftime, and watched the rest of the game there.

Later on, I caught up on the first half by watching the Pac-12 Network's condensed replay of the game. My God. Christian McCaffrey looked amazing. When David Shaw told the media that McCaffrey could be even better this year than he was last season, I said to myself, "yeah, right."

Watch that punt return again. You know, the one that didn't count. Effortlessly bouncing off of would-be tacklers, changing direction, juking one hapless defender out of his jock, and then turning on the jets. Just because it didn't make the stat sheet, that doesn't mean it didn't happen. I don't remember McCaffrey having breakaway speed quite like that last year. Usain Bolt would have been impressed. Tyrann Mathieu was.

McCaffrey's first half against Kansas State was incredible. And even though I missed much of it live, that condensed replay made it incredibly easy for me to catch up on the Cardinal. A few insignificant snaps were edited out, but I got the gist of how that first half game flowed, which matchups asserted themselves, and why the Cardinal scored the game's first 17 points. And I didn't need to stay up until the early hours of the morning to do it.

So, if I could do it, why couldn't some of you have been bothered to do it last year?

When your votes gave Derrick Henry the Heisman Trophy over Christian McCaffrey, I wasn't mad. I wasn't cursing and throwing things around the house. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't have. My wife and I were about to have our Holiday party. Wouldn't have made much sense to trash my place just minutes before our guests were due to arrive. That's not what good hosts do.

Another reason I didn't get mad: Stanford was still going to the Rose Bowl. McCaffrey may not have won the trophy, but the Cardinal still wore the crown as the Pac-12 champs. I will never be in a bad mood when Stanford fans are planning for Pasadena on January 1.

Now? Nine months later? I'm still not mad. But it irks me a bit. Certainly more today than it did then. Part of it stems from McCaffrey's next appearance following the Heisman snub: a tour-de-force performance in the Card's demolition of Iowa in the Rose Bowl. That was the best first half I've seen since "Full Metal Jacket", by the way.

But the more likely explanation for my slight irritation is the excuse-making that continues to this day. Ask most college football talking heads why McCaffrey didn't win the Heisman and they won't say it was because Henry was the better player. Many of them will blame Stanford's kickoff times.

The Cardinal played many of their games last year at 7:30 pm Pacific, which, of course, is a 10:30 pm kickoff back on the East Coast. Therefore, the theory goes, McCaffrey didn't win because he played too late in the day for many of you to watch. It might explain why Henry took every Heisman voting region except -- of course -- the Far West.

I lived in the Eastern Time Zone for eight years. I spent many a Saturday night watching Stanford Football take me into early Sunday morning. It's not convenient. I get it.

But I don't buy it.

With the internet, social media, on-demand content, and technology being what they are now, the whole "time zone" excuse goes out the window. With the proliferation of college football content and the various ways to get it, you can see just about anything you need to see, any time you need to see it.

This time of year, college football television programming is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Go ahead. Turn on your TV right now and surf the channel listings. I guarantee you there is at least one college football-related show on at this exact moment. Highlight shows, studio shows, coaches' shows, you name it. it's probably on right now. That's not a bad thing.

Meanwhile, if you can't watch a game as it happens in real time, you can DVR it and watch it later. Or you can check it out On Demand. Or, you can do what I did and catch a condensed replay that still gets you caught up on the important things.

Here's the really cool part: many times, you don't need your television to watch this stuff. Got a smartphone? Got a tablet? Then you still can see what you're missing and stay up to date. Got Twitter? Can you watch Vines? Does your phone support GIFs? You can still watch snippets of McCaffrey making tacklers look stupid and leaving entire teams in the dust.

If you live in the Eastern Time Zone and/or anywhere in the SEC footprint, you don't need to stay up until the wee hours of the night to watch relevant West Coast football because it's your only way to legitimately see what's happening with your own eyes. Those days are over. And, thanks to technology, that excuse no longer applies.

So if you watched any shred of college football last year, you knew Christian McCaffrey was up to something. You knew his name. You knew he was doing big things just about every week. Or, at least, you should have.

Bottom line is this: if you didn't vote for Christian McCaffrey because those games were on too late for you, then that means you were too lazy to carry out your duties to the best of your ability.

By the way, how did McCaffrey's name not even appear on 100 of your ballots? And why did 16% of you submit your ballots before Championship Weekend?

This is the part of the voting process the Heisman Trust desperately needs to adjust and bring into the 21st century. Back in the days when many teams wrapped up their seasons the weekend before Thanksgiving, it made sense to be able to submit a ballot a week or two before the ceremony. There is no reason, in this day and age, for ballots to be accepted before Championship Weekend.

Laziness is a poor enough excuse to make the wrong decision. But those of you who submitted your ballots early or didn't put write McCaffrey down at all make me think that, for some of you, the dreaded SEC Bias may have been at work here, too.

During some of the Heisman fallout, some pointed fingers at Stanford's media relations and marketing departments. Could they have started their campaign a little earlier? Probably. But I'm not going to blame them. Nor am I going to blame the Pac-12 conference and the broadcast partners for consistently making Stanford play past many of your bedtimes.

This isn't on any of those people. This is on you. This is on those of you who didn't do their homework, and didn't honor the process. I'm happy for Derrick Henry, and I was thrilled to see his family celebrate. Henry wasn't a bad choice for Heisman, but he wasn't the right choice, either.

The good news is that McCaffrey's mission to end up in that room in New York again is off to a good start. Whether he gets there or not, hopefully this time you will take a much more thorough approach to your vote, and arrive at the right decision.

Cordially yours,

Troy Clardy

RANDOM PAC-12 THOUGHTS

My knee-jerk reaction after the game Friday night: that was a starting point. It was good enough to beat Kansas State. It probably won't be enough to beat the Card's next five opponents...

Impressed by how Ryan Burns started. Thought he showed fine pocket presence, and he confidently (and accurately) fired the ball into tight windows. The ball seemed to explode out of his hand, too. Most important, he didn't turn the ball over or grind the offense to a halt with delay-of-game penalties and ill-used timeouts. Of course, the second half wasn't as smooth, but that can be said about the entire offense, too...

I'm giving the historians out there an assignment: I can't remember the last quarterback to take snaps for the Card while wearing number 17. Can you?

How much different would that second half have looked if Bryce Love had been healthy and available to play? Quite different, I believe...

Can we give Jake Bailey the Ray Guy Award right now? No? I tried, Jake...

One of the things I love about traveling up and down the conference is conducting my own Pac-12 Breakfast Tour. In Eugene, G.J.'s Family Restaurant has made my list. No frills, friendly service, omelettes you need a hand truck for, and you won't break the bank eating there. That's a good combination...

I was in downtown Palo Alto last week, and I noticed that the California Pizza Kitchen had been shut down and replaced by a wealth management office. If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about Silicon Valley, I don't know what does...

Shameless Plug Alert... are you following me on Twitter? No? Why not? And give my Facebook page a Like while you're at it...

After 110 games, Autzen Stadium's sellout streak came to an end last week. That dates back to 1999, by the way. Are Duck fans as skeptical about their team's chances this season as some media members seem to be?

Eastern Washington does it again. And I told you about Cooper Kupp last week. Watching him torch Pac-12 secondaries has become a Week 1 tradition...

Sure, the Bruins took Texas A&M into overtime when they probably had no real business doing so. But it's hard to say which let me down more, UCLA's receivers or its defense. The Bruins' bad case of the dropsies can (hopefully) be fixed. The other stuff? Well, UCLA defensive coordinator Tom Bradley, Jim Mora, and the crew may have more work to do than many people think...

Ho hum...Alabama starts another season by steamrolling a directional school...

Quote of the Week (runner up), courtesy of Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly: "Yeah, we will make that decision [on our quarterbacks] this week." Ummmm....did he not see what DeShone Kizer did to the Longhorns? What decision is there to make?

Quote of the Week, courtesy of Alabama's Nick Saban: "We need to get more players that can play winning football." Mind you, he said this after the Tide poleaxed USC...

Not a Pac-12 thought, but... I realize that Hawaii is going to have it rough travel-wise no matter what. But flying all the way to Michigan (8,930 round-trip miles and six time zones to the east) and playing the Wolverines just one week after going to Sydney (10,156 round-trip miles and 20 hours ahead of Honolulu)? That's. Just. Brutal...

Quote of the Week (runner up), courtesy of Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly: \"Yeah, we will make that decision [on our quarterbacks] this week.\" Ummmm....did he not see what DeShone Kizer did to the Longhorns? What decision is there to make?

Quote of the Week, courtesy of Alabama's Nick Saban: \"We need to get more players that can play winning football.\" Mind you, he said this after the Tide poleaxed USC...

That's. Just. Brutal...
