Clardy's Corner: For Better Or Worse

It's time to take stock of Stanford Football's bright spots and its points for improvement. Unfortunately, heading into the Notre Dame road trip, one list is longer than the other.

"You are getting better or you are getting worse. You never stay the same."

That saying has hung on a giant sign spanning one end zone on Stanford Football's practice field for years. That reminder has hovered over everything the Cardinal have accomplished while becoming a top-flight program.

A football season, much like a football player's development, is organic. It's a process, as we've discussed before. It's an ever-evolving thing that never stays static.

So, given that, what about Stanford Football has gotten better? What has become worse? Seems like as good a time as any to evaluate.

I'm a positive guy as you know, so let's start with the list of things that have improved for Stanford. What has gotten better? Hmmmm. Well....individually, Frank Buncom has been a bit of a bright spot in a tough situation. Trenton Irwin has played well.

After that, that's it. That's about all I can think of.

I could probably throw in the fact that Stanford's effort level has not waned, but effort level is something people grasp for when the results are not coming.

Meanwhile, what has gotten worse for the Card? Oh, boy. How much time do you have?

We detailed the offensive line's struggles in last week's Corner. Injuries have taken their toll at the Card's key positions, particularly the secondary. The passing attack has really missed Greg Taboada and the dimensions his presence adds to the offense. The ground game is missing Daniel Marx.

The Ryan Burns Era started impressively against Kansas State. He completed his first ten passes, the ball seemed to explode out of his hand, and he looked poised in the pocket. We haven't seen much of that since, even when Burns has had time to do his job.

More troubling, some of the things Stanford Football fans thought they could count on this year haven't quite panned out. The defensive back depth that was a Cardinal strength at season's start has all but evaporated. Even Conrad Ukropina, normally as reliable a kicker as Stanford has ever had, hit the upright twice against Washington State.

Christian McCaffrey is certainly in that group, too. We knew he would be a marked man. We knew teams would pay super-close attention to him at all times. (well, most teams anyway. Still trying to figure out what USC was doing...)

We didn't know that the holes just would not be there for him to run through. We also didn't know that he would spend much of the third quarter against Washington State in the locker room and the fourth quarter on the sidelines. We now know that he is out of the Heisman Trophy race.

Morale amongst Cardinalmaniacs has also fallen off the table, perhaps lower now than it was after the Northwestern game last year. By game's end last week, Stanford Stadium looked like someone had called a fire drill, and everyone wearing Cardinal gear had evacuated the building. Given the result, that's understandable.

Thing is, there was absolutely no buzz about that game among Stanford fans. None. Stanford's first home game in three weeks, and its first with all of the students on campus. Didn't matter. Through the week, the message boards -- all of them -- were dead. Not a soul commented on last week's Corner.

Of course, that seems to be the case whenever the San Francisco Giants are in the playoffs these days. That sucks all the oxygen out of the room, even among Stanford fans. Then, once the Giants' run is over, many Cardinal fans return their attention to what's happening on The Farm. Now that the Giants have been bounced, welcome back to some of you, by the way.

The good news is that last week was not an endpoint. The season continues, and this week it moves to one of the biggest stages college football has to offer. And even though Notre Dame's struggles are deeper than Stanford's have been so far, a win in South Bend always resonates across the country.

And when David Shaw and the players suggest that execution was their main downfall against the Cougars, they're not wrong. That could have been a completely different game if the Card had put forth a more crisp effort.

There is plenty that Stanford still needs to clean up, and they'll need to do it on the road against a Notre Dame team that has its own problems. But no matter what, by Saturday evening, we will have a new set of answers for whether Stanford is getting better or worse.

RANDOM PAC-12 THOUGHTS

Here's why Washington State's newfound running game makes the Cougars even more dangerous: Luke Falk takes fewer hits. Back when WSU had to drop back 60, 70 times a game, it was almost inevitable that the quarterback would take a season-ending hit at some point. You could almost set your watch by it. Now? Not so much. I'm still wondering what took Mike Leach so long to at least entertain the notion of running the ball once in a while...

Flew to Spokane on Saturday afternoon. Checked the Washington-Oregon score. Dropped my jaw...

Boy, the Apple Cup sure got a lot more important over the weekend, didn't it?

Ryan Nall. My goodness. The only thing that stopped him was the end zone...

Was Cal's loss to Oregon State surprising? Sure. Especially the way that it happened. Was it shocking? No. Winning on the road is a different animal. Especially when you don't pack your defense...

I'm In Corvallis calling men's soccer for Pac-12 Network on Friday. In South Bend on Saturday. In Berkeley for another Pac-12 Network men's soccer game on Sunday. After all that, I may sleep in until next Friday...

Can't wait to be back in South Bend this Saturday! If you call yourself a college football fan, and you have the opportunity, you must go to a Notre Dame home football game. Such a special place on gamedays...

Of course, this also means another edition of the Pac-12 Breakfast Tour...and my go-to spot in Corvallis is the Broken Yolk. Will have a full report in next week's Corner...

Our Quote of the Week, is courtesy of David Shaw. Given the top story in the national news since last Friday, Shaw was asked to define what "locker room talk" is. Shaw, being the intelligent, dialed-in, and self-aware man of the 21st century that he is, had a two brilliantly perfect two-word response to that request: "I won't"...

Not a Pac-12 thought, but... Kevin Hogan has been promoted from the Cleveland Browns' practice squad to the active roster. 85% of me wants to congratulate him. The other 15% of me wants to console him. After all, it is the Cleveland Browns...

Not a Pac-12 Thought, but... wait a minute...they didn't win? Championships aren't predestined by the calendar? But Giants fans kept telling me that #itsanevenyear...

PAC-12 PICKS

USC (-8) @ Arizona. I don't have a feeling for this game. At all. But I seem to have fewer reasons to pick the Wildcats to win, so I like USC by 6.

Utah (-9) @ Oregon State. The Beavers are back. Right? Well...I wouldn't go that far. I don't think it will be easy, but I like Utah by 7.

Arizona State @ Colorado (-13). The Buffs lost to USC, but they learned some lessons along the way. We'll see what they learned this week. I like Colorado by 14.

UCLA @ Washington State (NL). Suddenly, the Cougs are on fire. And they're at home. Meanwhile, the Bruins don't even know if Josh Rosen is going to play. Whether he's ready to go or not, that quick, agile, aggressive Wazzu defense will give the Bruins fits. I like Washington State by 10.

Last week: 3-2 (straight-up), 3-2 (ATS). This year: 10-4 (straight-up), 7-6 (ATS). Last year: 30-15 (straight-up), 23-19 (ATS).
