Clardy's Corner: How It All Began

Every fan's journey starts somewhere. That's why Troy is more excited than most to see Stanford host Colorado this Saturday.

Let's face it. Colorado isn't exactly the kind of opponent that whips Cardinalmaniacs into a frothing frenzy. Stanford fans don't exactly rearrange their Saturdays when the Buffaloes come to town. Even though the Buffs are finally showing tangible signs of becoming a competitive program, their return to The Farm will not make Saturday's game the hottest ticket in town.

But when I see Colorado versus Stanford at Stanford Stadium, I get a bit excited, and a bit nostalgic. For me, Colorado-Stanford is where it all began.

September 18, 1993. The 20th-ranked Cardinal were coming off its first ten-win season, and they had Bill Walsh on the sidelines and Steve Stenstrom at quarterback. Colorado was coming in as the 8th-ranked team in the country, and they had players like Kordell Stewart, Charles Johnson, and future Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam.

You might remember the game-winning touchdown. On third-and-goal from the Colorado five with 13 seconds left, Stenstrom lofted a pass to Tony Cline in the end zone. Cline caught it the ball, which was immediately dislodged as he was leveled by Colorado's Dwayne Davis. The officials ruled that Cline got five toes down before losing the ball. It might not be a catch today, but it was a catch in 1993. Good thing, too. Touchdown. Stanford ahead, 41-37 with eight seconds remaining.

As the Stanford Stadium clock expired, Kordell Stewart dropped back, eluded a defender, slid outside the pocket, and uncorked a Hail Mary pass that traveled 67 yards in the air. But it was ten yards short of the end zone, and it fell incomplete. Ballgame. And a win for Stanford.

(Of course, 53 weeks later, Stewart would drop back, elude a defender, slide outside the pocket, and uncork a Hail Mary pass that traveled 73 yards in the air. That outcome, however, was very different...)

Stenstrom had thrown five touchdown passes -- two in the final 3:33 -- on his way to 382 yards passing. Cline's game-winning grab was his eleventh catch of the night. Justin Armour hauled in three scores. Some guy named David Shaw started the game at flanker, catching a 21-yard pass along the way. Colorado's offense had been mighty impressive too (551 total yards), but the Card had come through with a nation watching on ESPN.

If you're reading this, chances are you're a Stanford Football fan. Some have been fans for longer than others, but for all, the journey started somewhere. For me, it started with that game.

It was my first Stanford Football event. I was there in the old stadium's northeast stands with my mom, a CU grad. At a Colorado alumni event the night before, I boldly guaranteed a Stanford victory. This was back in the days when I was young and brash, of course. Now that I think of it, I'm not sure that Mom has been (invited?) back to any CU alumni events since then...

Five days after that game, I joined the rest of the Class of 1997 on The Farm. By that November, I had joined KZSU and was reporting on Stanford Football and covering Walsh's weekly press conferences in the Hall of Fame Room at the old Encina Gym. I'll take those experiences with me forever.

I might be one of the few who look back on the rest of that 1993 season with any degree of fondness. The football team certainly doesn't. After the win over Colorado, the 17th-ranked Card came back to earth the following week, losing by three to UCLA.

Three weeks later, Stanford's season was sealed with a loss at Arizona that was so inexplicable, two Cardinal fans in the stands that night decided to channel their frustrations with passion for Stanford Football into publishing a rogue rebel of restroom reading. Whatever became of that publication, anyway?

The final indignity came in the form of Big Game. Cal clowned the Cardinal, 46-17. I was in the locker room as a dejected Walsh delivered a somber postgame speech to his players ("we just got flat-a** beat out there today, men"). Stanford finished 4-7.

A season that had initially promised so much delivered very little. Stenstrom was a bright spot that year, setting single-season passing records that still stand today. Then again, with no running game behind him and an inexperienced and overmatched defense that could not stop opponents, he didn't have much of a choice.

23 years later, the stadium has changed. The program has reached heights most of us thought impossible for Stanford. And the Cardinal now share a conference with the Buffs. Still, at some point on Saturday, my mind is going to drift back -- even if only for a brief moment -- to the night in which those two teams met in that exact same spot, and Stanford won a game...and a new fan.

(Note: while writing this Corner, I stumbled onto ESPN's entire broadcast of that Stanford-Colorado game from 1993. It's on YouTube. Commercials and all. How's that for a trip back in time?)

RANDOM PAC-12 THOUGHTS

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the Notre Dame campus on football gameday is one of the most special places to be on the planet. That's still true despite the fact that I got booed by a six-year old kid for wearing Stanford gear...

David Shaw's postgame assessment: "Defensively, we won that game. Offensively, our inefficiency drives me nuts." Shaw, as usual, is spot on...

Solomon Thomas. My God. He treated the Notre Dame offensive line like John Bonham treated his drum kits...

Sure, they've had their struggles at times. But Stanford's defense this year has had two pick-sixes, recovered a fumble for a score, and been involved in two safeties. So there is that...

By the way, in case you forgot, Brian Kelly wasn't the only head coach in Saturday's game who stunted his own offense by switching quarterbacks. Does Keller Chryst's lackluster performance against Notre Dame mean that experiment is over?

You know, I thought I had been hearing a whistle in the stands throughout that game...

Believe it or not, I wasn't the only person who was in Corvallis last Friday and South Bend on Saturday. Big ups to Eric Dolan in the Stanford Athletics media relations office, who spent Friday with the women's swimming team watching someone named Katie Ledecky make her collegiate debut, then joined the football team in Notre Dame. As it turned out, Eric and I were actually on the same red-eye flight from Portland to O'Hare...and we didn't even know it at the time! Small world...

Whenever the Pac-12 Breakfast Tour heads to Corvallis, there's only one spot to visit: the Broken Yolk! I was in the mood for something different, so I went with the Loco Moco: a half-pound hamburger patty smothered in sausage gravy, two scoops of rice, and scrambled eggs. I was full for 12 hours. I'm not kidding. And I didn't even finish my plate! Good location in downtown Corvallis, good local vibe, and fantastic homemade strawberry jam. What more do you need?

Oh, the next stop on the Breakfast Tour is Tucson. Will be there Friday morning...and since I haven't been to Tucson since 1999 (when Todd Husak, Casey Moore, and the Card lit up Arizona in a game I was certain the Card were going to lose), I am certainly ready for your suggestions. Where should I go?

Our Quote of the Week comes from Washington State WR Gabe Marks, who didn't hold back his thoughts on UCLA's efforts to toughen its image. Instead of me transcribing them, I think it's best if you listen for yourself...

Not a Pac-12 Thought, but... the Big 12 is not expanding. It's for the best. Really, could any school on that list that have made that conference's product better? I don't think so. You get bigger to get better, not just to get bigger. Remind yourself of this every time you watch Maryland and Rutgers play...

Not a Pac-12 thought, but... a year ago, Michigan State was beating Michigan in shocking fashion. Last week, the Spartans were piledriven by Northwestern. Amazing what a difference 52 weeks can make, isn't it?

Not a Pac-12 thought, but... Seahawks-Cardinals next Sunday night? Finally...an NFL game I'm actually interested in watching. This has been a thoroughly unmemorable season so far, hasn't it?

Not a Pac-12 thought, but... "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown." Tonight at 8:00 p.m. on ABC. Be there...

Oregon @ Cal (-3). (Friday) The Ducks won't give up 70 points like they did against the Huskies, but the Bears may come close. Thing is, the Ducks might, too. I like Cal by 12.

Utah @ UCLA (NL). If the Utes were at full strength, I'd like their chances. But with all the significant injuries they've suffered, it's kinda hard for me to pick them in this one. So I won't. I like UCLA by 7.

Oregon State @ Washington (-36.5). To me, this game is simple math. Starting QB Darrell Garretson done for the year + backup QB Conor Blount out with a knee injury + Ryan Nall in a walking boot + a trip to Husky Stadium + a Washington team that's suddenly playing like it's 1991 again = I like Washington by 46.

Washington State (-7) @ Arizona State. Too many weapons for the Sun Devils to try to contain here. I like Washington State by 17.
