Clardy's Corner: Power And Control

It was a small moment that may have been forgotten by many who watched Stanford's win over Arizona. But for Troy, it spoke volumes.

Power is nothing without control.

It's one of my favorite sayings, and it can be applied to many different situations. It also aptly describes the lasting image I have from Stanford's 34-10 win over Arizona.

It came late in the third quarter, with the Cardinal comfortably ahead, 27-7. Quenton Meeks had been called for an unsportsmanlike conduct foul and was taken off the field. The FS1 TV cameras showed David Shaw seeking out Meeks, then having a calm yet one-sided conversation with his young player.

My lip reading skills aren't that great, but I could tell that when Shaw was speaking to Meeks, he wasn't raising his voice any higher than his normal sideline volume. He was looking Meeks straight in the eyes the entire time. At one point, Shaw made the only physical contact in the sequence by briefly poking Meeks' chest in a way that seemed to say "you're better than that, Quenton", "do your job, Quenton", and "I still believe in you, Quenton" all in equal parts.

FS1 gave us two angles of Shaw's conversation with Meeks, staying on them for 23 seconds, then cutting back to the action. And that was that.

Shaw's reaction to that situation, in this day and age, seems to be an outlier among college coaches. How many times have you seen a kid commit a personal foul and get sent to the sidelines, only to be promptly met by a raging head coach more hellbent on exercising and demonstrating his power than he is taking advantage of a teachable moment?

Look, we all have a mental list of coaches who would go mental in similar instances. I won't share my list here, but I suspect we'd come up with similar names off the tops of our heads. I'm also sure that David Shaw is not on any of those lists.

As I watched that exchange between Shaw and Meeks unfold, I saw a mutual respect between coach and player. From Meeks, I saw a young man who realized he had momentarily let his team down, gave his coach his full attention, and didn't make excuses. Meeks himself, like Shaw, is a coach's son, so I'm sure he knows the deal.

From Shaw, I saw power and control. And I saw him express them both in a way that neither showed up the player nor embarrassed Shaw himself.

Not every coach is the same, and not every kid is the same. Some players respond better when they're yelled at than they are when they're being talked to. But if it had been someone else coming off the field after drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct foul, I'm not sure that Shaw would have handled it any differently.

That was my most telling takeaway from Tucson. It was a small moment, but to me, it loomed large.

Don't get it twisted; it was nice to see the triumphant return of a healthy Christian McCaffrey. It was good to see the Stanford offensive line get a bit of its groove back against a defense that just isn't strong enough to compete in the Pac-12 right now. And the Stanford defense got after it again, limiting an undermanned opponent and making them one-dimensional.

Of course, there was also the quarterback play the Cardinal received from their new starter. Like many of you, I was underwhelmed by Keller Chryst's performance in his starting debut. I'm sure he was, too. I'm sure there are a lot of plays he wouldn't mind having back.

Then again, unlike some Stanford fans, I wasn't angry about what I saw from Chryst. It serves me right for going on Twitter and the message boards, but some of the reaction I saw about Chryst's evening literally made me throw my hands in the air. Some of it was out of control.

On some level, I get it. Sadly, that's just where the level of discourse is in sports (and other areas) these days. But still, I don't know what those folks were expecting. I didn't expect Chryst to come out of the chute playing like Lamar Jackson.

(for the record, I'm not even thinking about K.J. Costello right now. Actually, when his name is brought up, two questions come to my mind: why burn his redshirt this late in the season if Stanford doesn't have to? And with the way they've been blocking lately, why put him behind that offensive line?)

However, I am expecting Chryst to improve on his performance every week for as long as he has this opportunity. That was true when he was only seeing a series or two, and it's even more true now.

That's all I can do. Spending my time ranting about the quarterback play after a 24-point Stanford win, in my mind, would make me look like the coaches who choose to spend their time on the sidelines yelling at their players instead of coaching them up when they may need it most.

Things will go wrong. That's certainly true in life, and it's definitely true in football. And you can tell a lot about someone by watching how they respond when their plans go sideways. So, when things go wrong, who chooses to spend their energy trying to correct it and make it right? And who chooses to throw that energy into a tantrum that, in all honesty, solves nothing and often risks making things worse?

I don't have time for tantrums. Nor, it seems, do David Shaw and the Cardinal. The calendar has turned to November, and time is running out. But while a prestige bowl might be out of reach now, the Cardinal still have the power to control whether they pull off a nine-win regular season.

RANDOM PAC-12 THOUGHTS

If you're mad that Washington didn't make the top four of the season's first College Football Playoff rankings, relax. Then consider two things: one, the Huskies' schedule isn't exactly a checkmark in their favor. Two, it's November 2. I suspect that by the time the final rankings are announced a little over a month from now, a few things will have changed...

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. In that win over Utah, the Huskies were both. Myles Gaskin and the Washington ground game ripped chunks out of Utah's defense in the second half. And none of the officials threw a flag on that game-deciding punt return...

I spent much of Saturday afternoon wondering why Utah was doing anything other than handing the ball to Joe Williams. Then I spent much of Saturday night wondering why Stanford was doing anything in the second half other than handing the ball to Christian McCaffrey...

Is Oregon State getting to be that good at home? Or is Washington State not as mentally tough as I think? I want to give the Beavers credit, but there's no way in the world that game should have gone like that...

Next week's Cal-Washington State game is a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Looks like #Pac12AfterDark is going to become #Pac12AfterMidnight...

Shout out to TreeBoy, who took a page from the Pac-12 Breakfast Tour itinerary and checked out the Baja Cafe while he was in Tucson last week. Glad you liked it! Next stop: Eugene! And per FrankO's recommendation, I'll be dropping by the Glenwood this Friday morning when I'm in town for Pac-12 Network soccer duty. I'm counting on you here, Frank!

Shameless plug alert... as I type this, I have 993 followers on Twitter. Who wants to be number 1,000?

Josh Rosen could be done for the year? Well, that clinches it, then. This has officially become a nightmare season in Westwood...

Stat of the Week: when Stanford dropped out of the AP polls a few weeks ago, it marked the first time that neither the Cardinal, the Ducks, nor the Trojans were ranked since November 1999. That was a long time ago, my friends...

Not a Pac-12 Thought, but... any important baseball games happening tonight?

Not a Pac-12 Thought, but... vote. I have.
