Clardy's Corner: November To Remember

Stanford going undefeated this month should make for a November to remember, right? Troy isn't getting that sense. This week's Corner explores!

To put it kindly, a Stanford win over Rice this weekend seems, well, likely. The Cardinal are 36 point favorites. The Owls are 3-8 in Conference USA, only recently escaping the cellar of their division. And, though it may not seem possible, their defense is statistically worse in some areas than Cal's defense.

So if the Cardinal are able to beat Rice, it will give Stanford a perfect mark in November. Over the last 20 years, the Card have been able to pull that off only four times.

In 2012, Stanford went 5-0 in November, hammering hapless Colorado by 48 points, beating three ranked teams (#13 Oregon State, #1 Oregon, and #15 UCLA), and, for good measure, knocking off the still-ranked Bruins again in the Pac-12 title game. That November gauntlet may never be matched, much less surpassed.

The 2010 Cardinal -- for my money, the best football team this school has ever fielded -- won ugly in Tempe while steamrolling Arizona, Cal, and Oregon State en route to its clean sheet that November. That Big Game performance was the closest Stanford has ever come to playing a perfect game.

Stanford's run for the Roses in 1999 was keyed by November wins over Arizona State, Cal, and Notre Dame. And in November 1996, Stanford went from 2-5 and dead in the water to 6-5 and sailing off to the Sun Bowl (more on that month later). Of course, that was back in the days when a six-win season was cause for Cardinalmaniac celebration.

Any time Stanford goes undefeated in November, that's a good thing, right? That automatically means a win over Cal (unless Big Game is played in October, like it was in 2012. I still can't believe that happened). That also means Stanford is playing well and trending upwards during the most critical point of the season. And, in all of the noted instances, that also brings meaningful postseason appearances, whether modest (1996 Sun) or slightly bigger (1999 Rose, 2010 Orange, 2012 Rose).

Yet, for some, it seems that this will not be deemed a November to remember. Even if when the Card finish this month 4-0.

Is it because of the quality of opponent Stanford has been facing this November? That's part of it, sure. In case you didn't pay close enough attention a couple paragraphs ago, go back and see how the November 2016 slate stacks up with November 2012. There's no comparison.

Is it because the stakes don't seem to be nearly as high this time around? I wouldn't doubt it. Stanford has already clinched a bowl, so there's no drama there. And the Card are not in the mix for any of the big, big bowls, so there's no drama there, either.

Is it because of the lingering residue from Stanford's three earlier losses? It seems that way. That loss to Washington re-arranged everything, physically and psychologically. The loss to the Cougars was bewildering. And the loss to Colorado just made you want to go home and drink alone. It wasn't just the fact that Stanford lost, it was the way those respective games unfolded. That's what some Cardinalmaniacs seem to have problems getting over.

What I find interesting is that there was another Stanford football season that began with high expectations fueled by a capable defense and a generational talent on offense who wore Number 5. But as that season developed, the defense assumed much of the burden while the offense -- particularly the line -- wobbled through much of September and October. Along the way, the Cardinal were curbstomped by the Huskies in Seattle, and suffered a power outage on offense in a tough Homecoming loss.

Still, in the end, Stanford finished the season with nine regular-season wins. And they did it by running the table in November.

Yet, despite those setbacks, if you ask any longtime Stanford fans about that 1992 season, I'm sure they'll respond in glowing terms. Twenty-four years later, similar circumstances don't seem to be yielding similar warm feelings.

Hey, I'm guilty of this, too. Stanford's 2011 season left me somewhat underwhelmed. And I felt badly for feeling like it. Even though the Cardinal were having an all-time season, I felt like something was missing. Without Shayne Skov and Chris Owusu down the stretch, that team wasn't at full strength, and it showed.

That prevented me from enjoying that season as much as I should have. That's also nobody's fault but mine.

Back to this season. All in all, as I've said before, if 8-4 is your worst-case scenario, your program is in pretty good shape. And it seems that the Cardinal will end up right where many of us had them pegged all along.

But for those who are unimpressed with Stanford going undefeated this November, for whatever reason, I'll just offer this reminder: it sure beats the alternative.

It seems fitting that this Corner references that 1996 team, because 20 years ago today, Stanford capped that season's comeback by dominating Cal in the Big Game. Want to relive it? Want to hear a 21-year old version of me do my best John Facenda impression? Love the Rocky IV soundtrack? Check out this recap of the 1996 Big Game that appeared as part of our Sun Bowl pregame show on KZSU that year. That game was so much fun to call for KZSU.

Hell, while you're at it, why not relive that whole season? Check out Part One and Part Two as well. Now that was a November to remember. And overall, it's still one of the more amazing seasons in recent Stanford Football history...

RANDOM PAC-12 THOUGHTS

Some of you might not like me saying this, but I'd like to see Cal do well. I was not happy to see the place only two-thirds full for the Big Game (to be fair, the Stanford contingent looked pretty meager, too). Someone on the BootboardPlus posed a YouTube link to the 1991 Big Game, and it was jaw-dropping to watch. A packed stadium. High emotion. High stakes. Trash talk. Everything the past few Big Games have lacked. Am I thrilled Stanford has now won seven of these in a row? You bet. Do I ever want to see Cal beat Stanford? Hell, no. But right now, this isn't a rivalry. It's merely a series. And it will likely stay that way until the Bears find people who can hit and tackle...

As dead as Memorial Stadium was, Berkeley's frat row was hopping before the game. It sounded like it was off the hook at the Sigma Chi house at 11:15 on Saturday morning...

By the way, Stanford campus life still has not recovered from the Delts getting booted out. I firmly believe this, and I know I'm not alone...

Rice's athletic director is Joe Karlgaard. That name sound familiar? It should. Karlgaard formerly worked in the development office at Stanford athletics. He also ran track for the Card. And he's a KZSU Sports alum, like me. Looking forward to bumping into him on Saturday...

Is Rice bringing its band? I hope so. That would make for an interesting Battle of the Bands at halftime, no?

Last week, Oregon forced four straight punts from Utah. Given how rough things have been for that Duck defense this year, that has to be our Stat of the Week...

You do realize that Utah has gone up against two of the most deficient defenses in the Pac-12 and found ways to lose to both of them, right?

If that game in Boulder had turned out differently for the Cougars, I'd be wondering why Luke Falk isn't getting more serious consideration for the Heisman Trophy right now...

Not a Pac-12 Thought, but... I hope I'm dead wrong on this. But why do I get the feeling that Art Briles will get another head coaching job in college football before Charlie Strong?

Not a Pac-12 Thought, but... on behalf of all of us at The Bootleg, I'd like to wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving! Eat, drink, be kind, and be thankful...

PAC-12 PICKS

Washington (-6) @ Washington State (Friday). While I have questions about the Huskies' pass rush, I have no questions about Washington's secondary. They make the difference. A Coug win would not surprise me by any stretch, but I like Washington by 7.

Arizona State (-3) @ Arizona (Friday). How far have each of these schools fallen? I like Arizona State by 9.

Oregon (-3) @ Oregon State. The Beavers need Victor Bolden and Ryan Nall to get loose. That could very well happen. Call me crazy, but I like Oregon State by 4.

Utah @ Colorado (-10). Last week, this would have been a hard game for me to pick. Now, given how well Sefo Liufau and the Buffs defense have been playing, it's hard for me to pick Utah. I like Colorado by 14.

UCLA (-3) @ Cal. Both teams are ending this season with a whimper. Somehow the Bears find a way. I like Cal by 8.

Last week: 3-2 (straight-up), 3-2 (ATS).

This year: 31-9 (straight-up), 19-18 (ATS).

Last year: 30-15 (straight-up), 23-19 (ATS).
