Last week we told you that North Mesquite HS senior tight end Pannel Egboh (Mesquite, TX) felt Stanford coming on strong and anticipated a big move. He understood that he would hear back on his admissions application status on or before December 19, and at that time he anticipated the Cardinal coaches would make their scholarship offer.
Egboh was surprised only to get the news early, as he found out late last week that he had been accepted. "Coach Teevens told me that I had been accepted and they were making an offer," the 6'6" athlete explains. "I was pretty excited - the whole family was really excited."
But the tight end recruit had little time to digest that news before he boarded a plane and headed for Fort Collins to check out Colorado State on his second official visit. The Rams offered recently and did a good job with their visit, according to Egboh.
"I have to say I really enjoyed it," he begins. "In particular, I liked how they use their tight ends in their offense. I saw some three-tight end formations, even."
So how did the trip West compare with his previous visit to Duke?
"I enjoyed both visits, and both places really emphasized how they like using tight ends," he answers. "I can't put one school above the other right now, in terms of the visit experience. Duke was my first visit, so initially they were very high, but right now I just don't know."
Stanford will not get their crack at a hosted official visit until January, but the Card are counting on the boost that admissions news gave them. They also sent longtime Stanford coach Dave Tipton into the home earlier in the week.
"Coach Tipton was a big guy," the recruit notes. "He was very informative, and he talked with my dad about all the things Stanford can do for you. My parents really liked him. With that visit and getting accepted to Stanford, my decision is going to be really hard to make."
Egboh adds that Rice and Baylor are a pair of teams in the mix, though he declares that Stanford, Colorado State and Duke are an even trio of his top favorites. One dark horse to watch, however, is Arizona. New head coach Mike Stoops is making recruiting waves already, and he has reaffirmed the Wildcates great desire to land the Texas tight end. Egboh is scheduled for an official visit to Tucson the weekend of January 23. He will make his Stanford official visit the weekend of January 9.
