It's been a busy last few days for 6'5" offensive tackle Allen Smith, who Monday returned from a two-day unofficial visit to Notre Dame. That evening he entertained an Arizona State coach in his house, which was the last time any college coach will be allowed in his home before Signing Day. Though he had homework to catch up on that evening, he spoke with coaches of each of his remaining favorite schools on their last night to reach him on the phone. Starting today, Smith has cut off all incoming phone calls from coaches and reporters alike.
Friday is the day he announced yesterday for his college commitment announcement, leaving him three days to sort things out with his family. Today might have been a bit of smooth sailing, with some peace and quiet, but someone did get through to him on his phone.
"Tom Lemming called me up and we are putting my high school announcement on ESPN," the Arizona lineman reveals. "I'm moving the time of the announcement a little later in the day to allow technology to broadcast it to a much wider audience."
That is exciting news for the blood-thirsty fans of ASU, UCLA, Notre Dame and Stanford - his final four schools. As Smith stands up at the podium to make his announcement at Corona Del Sol High School on Friday, he will be wearing a headset hooked up to his cell phone that will allow ESPN.com to put his words into a chat room of their hosting. The scheduled local time is 1pm (3pm Eastern, noon Pacific).
