Baseball Powers Their Way To Victory

After recording only two hits the entire game last night, Stanford erupted for five home runs today en route to a 13-4 victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs. John Mayberry, Jr. led the charge with a pair of home runs while Jeff Gilmore, who was making his first career start, tossed six very solid innings. With the win, this three-game series is now even with the rubber game taking place Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinal bounced back nicely today in posting a 13-4 victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs.  Stanford blasted five homers on the day including a pair from John Mayberry, Jr. while Jeff Gilmore tossed six quality innings in his first career start.

Stanford was held off the scoreboard in the first two innings.  In the first, Sam Fuld led off with a single, but was quickly erased on a Jonny Ash double play.  Then in the second, Danny Putnam singled to lead off, but he was thrown out at second on an attempted steal.

Gilmore struck out two batters in the first inning before giving up an unearned in the bottom of the second.  With one out, Christian Vitters singled and then moved to second on a Donny Lucy passed ball.  After Chris Patrick reached on an infield single to move Vitters to third, Nick Morisi grounded out to third to score the run.

Stanford then erupted for six runs in the third inning to take a 6-1 lead.  Facing FSU starter Matt Garza, Lucy led off with a single and then advanced to second two batters later when Fuld walked.  Ash followed with an RBI double to right center field scoring Lucy which tied the game at 1-1.  Then Jed Lowrie, who was hitting third in the order today, blasted a home run to right field to put Stanford in front at 4-1.  But the Cardinal wasn't done.  Putnam stepped up an promptly singled and after a John Mayberry, Jr. fly out, Chris Carter smoked a home run to left field to make the score 6-1.

After Gilmore worked a quick 1-2-3 bottom of the third, the Cardinal went back to work in the fourth.  Adam Sorgi led off with a single which was followed by a Fuld walk.  Playing good situational baseball, Ash bunted the runners over and then Lowrie brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to center.

After another perfect 1-2-3 inning from Gilmore, Stanford added two more scores in the fifth to take a 9-1 lead.  Mayberry, Jr. led off the inning with a home run to left field.  The Cardinal scored their second run of the inning on an RBI groundout off the bat of Sorgi to score Carter who had earlier walked.

The Bulldogs pushed across two runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Cardinal lead to 9-3.  With one out, Ryan Haag singled and then Richie Robnett doubled to put runners on second and third.  Up next was #3 hitter Kent Sakamoto and he came through with a two-run single to make it a six-run game.  Those two runs were the first earned runs off Gilmore in over nine innings this season.

Stanford padded their lead with two scores in the top of the sixth.  Putnam ripped a home run to center field to make the score 10-3 and that was immediately followed by another Mayberry, Jr. home run.  Five home runs today from Stanford hitters - all from the #3 through #6 guys in the order.

Gilmore breezed through the sixth inning which ended his afternoon.  Blake Holler relieved Gilmore to start the seventh and the freshman lefty continued to impress.  He worked a perfect 1-2-3 seventh inning on just ten pitches.

The Cardinal scored their final two runs of the game in the eighth inning to push the lead up to 13-3.  Ash led off with a walk, was balked to second, and then moved to third on a Lowrie double.  Putnam brought home Ash with a ground out while Mayberry, Jr. scored Lowrie on a sacrifice fly.

Fresno State touched up Holler for a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Tom Shannon, but Holler escaped without further damage and then put up a zero in the ninth to end the game.
