2001-2002 Sears Directors' Cup

For the 8th straight year, Stanford has been awarded the Sears Directors' Cup for the overall top Division I athletics program in the country. Even though Stanford has points to gain from baseball, the trophy was officially awarded a week early due to the mathematical clinching in the standings. Stanford wins with a 393.5-point margin over Texas. The suspense was over a month ago though when The Bootleg declared Stanford the winner of its 8th consecutive Sears Cup.

2001-2002 Scoring Guidelines:

- 20 sports are counted in the standings: the top 10 scoring men's sports and the top 10 scoring women's sports

- Standings and point determination are based on the size of the bracket (the largest bracket size counted is a 65-team bracket). A separate point structure is established for individual sports (those in which teams are not placed into brackets).

- (new rule) Both indoor and outdoor Track and Field points will be counted.

- Since the men have more possible sports in which to score, fencing and skiing are initially counted in the women's tally. However, these sports can be switched into the men's tally if the women score in more than their permissible number of sports. The scoring for rifle is determined by the structure of the team. Rifle is automatically counted for the gender that has a higher percentage of members on the team.

- Fall standings are updated three times (end of November - December) with final fall standings released the first week of January. Winter standings are updated twice (end of March - April) with final winter standings released at the end of April. Spring standings are updated twice (end of May - June) and the final division standings are announced in mid- June.  For 2001-2002, the standings update schedule is as follows: 11/29, 12/13, 12/27, 1/8/02, 3/21/02, 4/4/02, 4/25/02, 5/30/02, 6/18/02, 6/25/02.
