2004-2005 Scoring Guidelines:

- 20 sports are counted in the standings: the top 10 scoring men's sports and the top 10 scoring women's sports

- Standings and point determination are based on the size of the bracket. A separate point structure is established for individual sports (those in which teams are not placed into brackets).  Teams that place 65th or lower in a recognized championship will earn five points.  Divisional sports that have a participation percentage of 10 percent or less will receive 50 percent of the points allocated for that bracket.  For Div. I, these 50% sports are: Men's and Women's Water Polo, Women's Gymnastics, Women's Bowling, Women's Ice Hockey, Rifle, Skiing, Fencing, Men's Volleyball.

- Points for Track and Field are awarded for the season in which the highest finish is gained.

- Since the men have more possible sports in which to score, fencing and skiing are initially counted in the women's tally. However, these sports can be switched into the men's tally if the women score in more than their permissible number of sports. The scoring will be determined to give the school the most points possible.  Rifle will only be counted for the gender that has a higher percentage of members on the team.

- Fall standings are updated three times (end of November - December) with final fall standings released the first week of January. Winter standings are updated three times (end of March - April) with final winter standings released at the end of April. Spring standings are updated twice (end of May - June) and the final division standings are announced in mid- June. For 2004-2005, the standings update schedule is as follows: 12/2, 12/16, 12/30, 1/11/05, 3/24/05, 4/7/05, 4/14/05, 4/28/05, 6/2/05, 6/17/05, 6/29/05.
