While he has not always pitched the Friday opener in weekend series this year, Gilmore has been Stanford's top arm throughout the season. He will take the lead for the Cardinal tomorrow when he takes the mound against TCU in the opening game of the NCAA Regional in Waco (Tex.). That game could be Gilmore's last appearance of the year, and perhaps the last of his college career. He is expected to be taken in the first day of next week's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, and odds are better than not that he will sign and start his pro career.
Entering this weekend, Gilmore leads Stanford with a 10-2 record, which exactly matches his final sophomore W/L total. The junior righthander has a 3.56 ERA and a 3:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (76 vs. 25) thus far on the 2005 season. He has three complete games in his last six starts and has lost just one game in his last three-plus months of pitching.
In this exclusive interview with The Bootleg, Gilmore talks about his continued development as a pitcher, plus his prospects and plans for next week's draft - and beyond.
