Tongo Lands Offer, Names Favorites

Linebacker Osahon Tongo from Naperville (Ill.) North went from a relative unknown to one of the top prospects in the Land of Lincoln in recent months. The 6'2" 220-pound athlete hit a growth spurt, was an all-conference selection in '04, and now several schools have offered a scholarship. Tongo's newest offer comes from the Pac-10...

"I was just recently offered a scholarship by Stanford," says Tongo, ranked as the #77 overall player in Scout.com's new Midwest Hot 100 for the Class of 2006.

"Georgia Tech, Illinois, Boston College, Northwestern, Kansas and Indiana have also offered. I'm still waiting on a couple of schools to make decisions on an offer.

"I went to the Michigan camp and they told me that they'll be keeping a close eye on me this season. I'm also waiting to hear from Purdue and Wisconsin.

"My favorites right now are Miami (Fla.), Illinois, Georgia Tech, Stanford, Northwestern, Indiana and Kansas. I don't have a leader. I'm going to take my time and take my visits.

"Northwestern and Stanford are really up there because of the academics but that's just one of the factors that I'm looking at in a school."

Does Osahon Tongo plan on camping at any schools in the month of July?

"I'm kind of maxed out on camps. I'm going to New York for a family vacation and then I'm going to get ready for the season by spending time working out with my team." Tongo said.

Tongo had 60 solo tackles, four forced fumbles and two sacks as a junior. He was the only junior to start on defense for the Huskies in 2004.

Extra Point -- Naperville North coach Larry McKeon says that Tongo is a natural Sam (strong side) Linebacker. Don't look for a decision soon from Tongo. Although he denies a leader, Miami is very high on his list. Hurricanes linebacker coach Vernon Hargreaves did spend some time with Osahon while he was in Coral Gables on an unofficial visit during the spring. Miami doesn't feel that Tongo has stopped growing and they see him as a defensive end in the future. Illinois really wants Tongo to stay home and play for the Illini. Stay tuned.
