One area where the Stanford defense has been inconsistent in 2005 has been tackling, and that will be a priority Saturday against the explosive offense of UCLA. A bright light in the Cardinal's three straight wins and improvement on defense has been Silva, who elevated into a starting role at the "Will" inside linebacker position next to Kevin Schimmelmann, in relief of injured Michael Okwo during the Oregon game. Silva is a fourth-year player for Stanford who previously contributed primarily on special teams, but his October opportunities have revealed a standout defensive playmaker, totaling a team-high 33 tackles over the last four games.
