Stanford Bounces Back With A 13-0 Rout

The Stanford Cardinal baseball team salvaged a game of their series with Oregon State with a 13-0 thrashing of the Beavers on Sunday afternoon in Corvallis. Sam Fuld and Chris O'Riordan each homered while John Hudgins threw a four-hit shutout on the mound as Stanford got back to .500 in Pac-10 play. Read on for a complete recap.

After struggling with the bats for two weeks, the Stanford Cardinal exploded for 13 runs in a 13-0 thrashing of the Oregon State Beavers this afternoon in Corvallis.  Sam Fuld (4-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI), Chris O'Riordan (4-for-6, 2B, HR, 3 RBI), Ryan Garko (3-for-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI), and Andy Topham (3-for-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI) paced the Cardinal offense while John Hudgins threw a four-hit shutout on the mound.  With the win, Stanford gets back to .500 in conference play at 6-6 while they improve their overall record to 29-12.

The scoring for the Cardinal began in the top of the first inning as Ryan Garko doubled home Sam Fuld with two outs to take the early 1-0 lead.  In the top of the third inning, Fuld led off with a single and then Chris O'Riordan stepped to the plate and homered to left field, his seventh home run of the year, extending the lead to 3-0.  Stanford would add another run later in the inning as with two outs Andy Topham doubled and then he came across on a double off the bat of Donny Lucy increasing the lead to 4-0.

In the top of the fourth, Stanford put across a single run extending the lead to 5-0 as O'Riordan singled home Fuld for another two-out run scoring hit.  The Cardinal then scored a single run in the top of the fifth inning as Ryan Garko led off with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball and then scored on a Topham double for a 6-0 lead.  Stanford then put the game out of reach with four runs in the sixth frame extending the lead to 10-0.  Scott Dragicevich, who was making his first start since April 12th, led off with a single and then advanced to second when with one out, Sam Fuld walked.  A Chris O'Riordan single loaded the bases for Garko and the junior catcher walked forcing home a run to make the score 7-0.  Carlos Quentin then reached on a fielder's choice scoring Fuld from third extending the lead to 8-0.  The ninth run of the game scored on a wild pitch and then run #10 came across on a RBI double off the bat of Andy Topham.

Just for good measure, Stanford put across two more scores in the top of the eighth, one on a solo homer by Sam Fuld and the other run on a RBI double by Garko scoring O'Riordan who had earlier doubled.  Then in the ninth, the Cardinal scored their 13th run of the game on a Fuld single scoring Dragicevich.  In all this afternoon, Stanford recorded 13 runs on 19 hits.

Meanwhile, while all this happening while Stanford was hitting, John Hudgins was having his best outing on the mound this season.  The sophomore righthander gave up just four hits while walking only three and striking out five.  Oregon State never really mounted a serious rally as only four runners got into scoring position as with the win, Hudgins improved his record to 7-0.
