The 13-point margin at the end of the game was misleading Thursday night at Maples Pavilion. Arizona State trailed by 22 points inside the final two minutes, when the Cardinal emptied their bench and the Sun Devils bulldozed their way to garbage free throws in the final minute. Free throws were indeed a hallmark of the evening in Stanford's 82-69 win, with the Card collecting 31 points at the charity stripe.
But we are all about the remainder of the exciting action, where Dan Grunfeld produced the best scoring game of his career on an assortment of jumpers and drives. Classmates Matt Haryasz and Jason Haas also had strong games, with the former chipping in 22 points and the latter dishing four assists; both also had defensive highlights. Chris Hernandez hit from outside twice on the evening while also setting up teammates. Freshmen made a number of plays, ranging from Lawrence Hill blocks to Mitch Johnson dimes to an Anthony Goods bomb. Big Peter Prowitt was part of the passing success while also scoring inside, and Tim Morris showed the sweet jumper of his recent shooting success. And at the end of the second half, the crowd was delighted to see rare game action for Carlton Weatherby and Kenny Brown.
On paper, the Sun Devils are a struggling team, but they have given numerous opponents fits this year - especially on the road, where they have won thrice in conference including Saturday at California. It was a good performance for the Cardinal, as these highlights will help attest. Enjoy!
