Bootleg Audio: Mike Montgomery

Now free from coaching for the first time since he left The Farm, Mike Montgomery is enjoying being a fan and growing into his new career as a television commentator. You have heard his Xs-and-Os analysis of Stanford during game broadcasts, but what does Montgomery say about the state of the program and the job being done by Trent Johnson? The 18-year Cardinal coach tells The Bootleg.

He left two and a half years ago, but he never really left.  Mike Montgomery still lives a stone's throw from campus in Menlo Park with wife Sarah and still enjoys being around Stanford Basketball.  No longer coaching the Golden State Warriors, Montgomery has the time this season to attend many more Cardinal practices and games.  You have also seen him provide color commentary for a few Stanford games this year.

The ominpresent shadow of the 18-year Cardinal coach and legend hangs over third-year Stanford head man Trent Johnson, but you have not heard anybody in the college basketball or Bay Area media interview Montgomery for his opinions and assessment of the job that Johnson is doing.  We caught up with the retired coach on the phone Sunday to do just that.

Montgomery discusses the state of the program, the future he sees for Johnson and the Cardinal, public misconceptions and more in this exclusive interview with The Bootleg.  It is the first real public stamp of approval given by the former head coach to his successor.
