Stanford's starting point guard, Chris Hernandez, will miss the start of the 2002-2003 season with a broken foot. The expected timeline for his absence is 4-6 weeks, which is untimely given Stanford's abrupt start to this season. The Card have just one exhibition game (Nov. 12 vs. the Olympic Club) before opening the regular season with a bang in the NIT. With a loaded field that includes Xavier, Florida, Kansas and North Carolina, Stanford was already facing an uphill battle with a very young team, and the slope just got steeper without Hernandez.
The timing of when Hernandez broke his foot is as of yet unclear. He felt some pain last week in practices, and a closer look at the foot revealed the break. Today was the first day that he was held out of practice, wearing a boot on his left foot and spending much of his time on an exercise bike.
Senior Julius Barnes has now assumed the lead role at the point in practice, and Matt Lottich looks to be picking up the slack at the off-guard position. We will know more in the coming days and weeks how the Stanford lineup and rotation will adapt to the loss of the very talented and inspirational Hernandez.
