Stanford Claims 9th Straight Directors' Cup!

As The Bootleg declared last month, for the 9th straight year, even with new rules and scoring structures, Stanford has been awarded the NACDA Directors' Cup for the overall top Division I athletics program in the country. Even though Stanford has 90 points to gain from baseball, the trophy was officially awarded a week early due to the mathematical clinching in the standings.

2002-2003 Scoring Guidelines:

- 20 sports are counted in the standings: the top 10 scoring men's sports and the top 10 scoring women's sports

- Standings and point determination are based on the size of the bracket. A separate point structure is established for individual sports (those in which teams are not placed into brackets). (new rule) Teams that place 65th or lower in a recognized championship will earn five points.

- (new rule) Points for Track and Field are awarded for the season in which the highest finish is gained.

- Since the men have more possible sports in which to score, fencing and skiing are initially counted in the women's tally. However, these sports can be switched into the men's tally if the women score in more than their permissible number of sports. The scoring will be determined to give the school the most points possible.

- Fall standings are updated three times (end of November - December) with final fall standings released the first week of January. Winter standings are updated three times (end of March - April) with final winter standings released at the end of April. Spring standings are updated twice (end of May - June) and the final division standings are announced in mid- June. For 2002-2003, the standings update schedule is as follows: 12/5, 12/19, 1/2/03, 1/9/03, 3/20/03, 4/3/03, 4/17/03, 5/1/03, 5/29/03, 6/16/03, 6/26/03.

- (new rule) Championships must have a minimum of 12 teams in the field to be included in the Directors' Cup standings (Div. I sports eliminated: Men's and Women's Water Polo, Men's Volleyball, Women's Ice Hockey, Women's Rifle). Sport breakdown and field sizes for Division I, scored with the team bracket method unless otherwise indicated:
