Stanford needs six wins this season to make a bowl. Making a bowl is a realistic expectation for the Cardinal that will progress the program forward. As Stanford's not winning the Pac-10 this year, not competing for a national title, six wins is all that matters: the difference between six and seven and eight pales in comparison to the difference between five and six.
As such, the Card need to win the games they should, steal a few they shouldn't and win the close ones, and us fans simply need to count to six. Style points don't matter – we're not in the BCS race looking to impress voters, and we're not in the chase for the Pac-10 title and projecting forward from this opening game to see how we'll compete against the USCs and Cals of this world. Just get to six, and Stanford knocked one down today.
