Aug. 16 Q&A with Jim Harbaugh

Week two of Stanford fall camp kicked off on Monday, and The Bootleg was on hand to participate in coach Jim Harbaugh's post-practice media session. Harbaugh touched on a variety of topics, most of which focused on the training camp position battles.

On the backup quarterback competition:
"The three [quarterbacks], Loukas, Picazo, and Nunes have all stepped forward. They're all playing well. Alex is ahead."

On the right tackle competition:
"That's still being competed for. The two leaders are Hall and McGillicuddy."

On how true freshman Cameron Fleming fits into the right tackle mix
"He's doing fine. There's a lot of talent there. He has to play lower with his pads. That's number one. And learn the system. I wouldn't look for him to be the starter on September 1, but he's doing a good job. Cole Underwood is doing a very good job as well."

On the cornerback position opposite Richard Sherman:
"That's a competition, too. Two guys that are leading there are Gatewood and Bademosi."

On the free safety competition:
"I'd say Michael Thomas. Taylor Skaufel has also really stepped up. He's in the mix. It's still a competition. Yancy… Those guys are playing the most."

On the punting competition:
"Bad day to ask about that. We didn't punt so well today."

On the running backs competition:
"They're really stepping up. Patch has stepped up, but stepped up to be the starter? We're not ready to name a starter yet. If we played a game tomorrow, Jeremy Stewart could start."

On the third wide receiver spot:
"Doug Baldwin has done a nice job stepping up. That's another veteran guy who had a really good camp. He's been healthy every day. He had a heck of spring. He was healthy all spring. He's been healthy all through camp. He's getting to the appropriate spot and making the catches. He's really had a good start to camp here."

On freshmen possibly breaking into the two-deep:
"It's still a little early to tell, but there are guys that are playing well. Probably the highest guy on the depth chart in the offense-defense two-deep right now of any freshman is Barry Browning. He's doing a nice job at corner. Then we had some special teams two-deepers that are freshmen."

On the most pleasant surprises of camp
"Besides the usual guys, Taylor Skaufel, Derek Hall, Tyler Mabry had a good first week. Barry Browning. Loukas had an exceptional day yesterday."
