Barnwell Has a Passion

Poncho Barnwell is yet another very talented in-state prospect for Syracuse to look at this season and spoke to him on Thursday night to gauge his interest in the Orange. While talking to him we got some very interesting news about his interest level in ‘Cuse.

Poncho Barnwell, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound defensive end from East High School in Rochester, N.Y., has a few schools approaching him, but there is one that he holds above the rest.

"I've been talking to Syracuse a lot and schools like Connecticut and Rutgers have been by to see me as well, but I didn't get to talk to them when they were in," Barnwell stated. "I met the Rutgers coach when he came by, but I don't know much about them and I don't know much about Connecticut either."

We asked Barnwell if there were any schools he's hoping to hear from during the process.

"I've always been a Syracuse fan to be honest with you," Barnwell said. "I took a visit there and it was great. I took a tour of the weight room, had a nice little breakfast and then saw the basketball game against Villanova which was cool."

"Coach (Tyrone) Wheatley is recruiting me, so I met him and I met their defensive line coach too and they were really good people that showed me that they really wanted me to go there," Barnwell explained. "I also got to meet (Doug Marrone) and he was very straight-forward, nice and let me know what my responsibilities were if I was going to get into Syracuse."

"I've always liked them because it's a part of our community and I can show off Rochester for New York State. They're always the best team in our state and I just want to support the state and be a part of home. That just means a lot to me."
