Grant is a Throwback

Lakewood, Ohio native Sam Grant is the type of tight end that takes pride in his blocking and is a bit of a smash-mouth, throwback type. When we spoke to him on Wednesday he was quicker to point out his pancake blocks and his team's rushing yards than his own stats and that's probably what ‘Cuse likes about him.

Sam Grant, a 6-foot-6, 230-pound tight end from St. Edward's High School is certainly a talented pass-catcher and is an athlete as well as he plays AAU basketball, but when you talk to him he wants to talk about "the way the game should be played" which is smash-mouth football. He also liked talking about Coach Tyrone Wheatley, who seems to be doing an excellent job recruiting the young man.

"I talked to Coach (Tyrone) Wheatley yesterday actually and we just spoke about their program and what they have to offer," Grant said. "A couple of my buddies and I are going down to the Arnold Classic down in Columbus this weekend which is all about weight lifting, so he's really into lifting too, so we were going back and forth talking about that and what they do in the gym up at Syracuse as well."

"My relationship with Coach Wheatley is good. He's a down to earth guy who is easy to talk to and he actually played with my position coach John Jaeckin up at Michigan. They want me to come up to meet the coaches and see the facilities in the next couple of months."

"They last time I was up there was for AAU basketball and we played at the Carrier Dome and going off of memory I did like what I saw up there, but I'd like to get up there again," Grant explained. "I can't talk a lot about the program, but I like what I've been told about how they like their tight ends in that offensive scheme. Academics are also really important to me, so I want to learn more about them in that area as well."

As a junior, Grant had 16 catches for 252 yards and three touchdowns. He had 88 pancake blocks and St. Edwards had two running backs over 1,000 yards each and a quarterback who ran for over 950 yards.
