Owens Coming North

Syracuse recently dipped into the Sunshine State again and came away with a lengthy linebacker in Leroy Owens who should be able to keep with any tight end in coverage and bring a nice weapon to the Front Seven for the Orange.

Palatka High School isn't necessarily a breeding ground for FBS athletes like some other powerhouses in the State of Florida, but they've put out a number of talented players over the past several years. The most recent, Leroy Owens, has just committed to Syracuse and the 6-foot-4, 210-pound ‘backer spoke to us about why he's coming North.

"The whole coaching staff was very excited when I committed," Owens said. "They had offered me about four weeks ago and I had been talking with Coach Jimmy Brumbaugh a lot. We have a very good relationship right now and are like Father and Son. I like that he's very motivating and will talk to me about things away from football. He's also from Florida, so he can really relate to me well on certain things."

"I picked Syracuse because of the education and the pride they take in their school and the football team," Owens explained. "They also told me about how nice the facilities were and I'm going to be taking a trip up there before the end of the summer to visit."

"They like me at linebacker and my length is something that will put me on the outside from what I've been told," Owens stated. "I can definitely help on special teams coming in and I am definitely a form tackler. Leadership is definitely something I bring as well and my range is really good."

As a junior, Owens registered 93 tackles, had five sacks and 23 pass break-ups.

He reports a 2.8 core GPA and scored a 790 on his SAT.
