"I felt like it was home," Trejo admitted. "I saw an opportunity and I took it. I like, academically, what they're offering. I feel like I'll fit in well with the program and get along with the people just fine."
Trejo woke up Sunday morning knowing Syracuse was the place for him. Excitedly, he spoke to Greg Adkins to inform him of his decision.
"I talked to coach Adkins this morning," Trejo explained. "He was very happy. We talked about the plan for me once I'm here. We're trying to get a home visit for tomorrow.
"We're trying to do it with the head coach (Doug Marrone) and coach Adkins to have them fly down. We're going to finalize the time tonight. But they're going to come out and meet my parents and stuff like that."
The official visit this weekend was huge in Trejo's pledge. He loved what he saw on campus and thought the facilities were great. But it was the history of the Syracuse program that sealed the deal for the 6-foot-5 defensive end.
"My favorite part of the visit was going around and looking at everything," the Golden West (CA) product recalled. "I was looking at the history of the school and stuff like that. Looking at the players that have come out of there.
"That's what really got me interested and helped me make my decision. I wanted to be part of that history too. Then we went and talked to the academic counselor. I was talking to him. He told me what they had to offer. Those were my two favorite parts right there."
Another part of the visit that Trejo really enjoyed was hanging out with some of the current players. He specifically enjoyed talking to Deon Goggins and Macky MacPherson. Those conversations also helped with his decision.
"Deon Goggins and Macky," Trejo outlined. "I liked hanging out with them. That helped with my decision a lot. Especially with Deon telling me about his adjustment year. He was telling me how different it is from the West Coast.
"He was basically telling me, that when I do come, the things I need to do and not do. He was telling me to stay strong. I like it a lot. Everything he told me, I liked it."
Now that Trejo has committed to the Orange, he is already looking towards his time at Syracuse. He has clear goals, on and off the field.
"I want to do the best I can on the field," Trejo offered. "As far as academics, I want to achieve greatness academically. I want to get my degree.
"On the field, I just want to put my all out there. Hopefully get into the NFL while making my team great."
