Syracuse is looking to add talent to their secondary in the 2013 class. Originally only looking to add one prospect in the defensive backfield, the Orange are now looking for two safeties and a corner.
The solution to that need could be coming a little clearer as safety Darius Kelly, out of Pima Community College in Tucson (AZ), received his offer while on his official visit this weekend.
"Overall it was a pretty nice trip," Kelly recalled. "They ended up offering me. Syracuse, New York is a beautiful place. The school is very nice and the education is very nice.
"I got a chance to watch practice. It was a nice pace they've got going on over there and a nice setup. Facilities are real nice. It was a real nice trip. I enjoyed Syracuse."
When head coach Doug Marrone asked to speak with Kelly privately, he believe an offer was coming. Despite not being complete surprised by it, the offer was an exciting moment for the 5-foot-11 safety.
"The head football coach offered me," Kelly said. "I had already talked to the position coach and already had an idea it was coming. It was just a matter of sitting down and having the meeting.
"My reaction was, I knew it was coming, but I was excited. It was another division one offer so it was cool."
Currently, Kelly is a verbal commit to Marshall. However, the Syracuse offer is one that will make him take a step back to evaluate his options.
"I wouldn't say it changed it much as far as my commitment to Marshall right now," Kelly declared. "I've still got to get back and go home and sit down with my family. We'll see. It's definitely another option.
"It's definitely something to think about. I'm going to have to take some time to sit down and think about it."
Receiving an offer was not the only part of the visit that Kelly will remember. He was impressed by what he saw at Syracuse.
"The facilities are real nice," Kelly admitted. "Things are brand new. Everything's built up. We got to go to the basketball game. It's Syracuse basketball. That's big time basketball. It was real nice.
"I would say my favorite part was getting to learn more about the education part. Learning about the people that came out of Syracuse. The people we see on TV and those that do that kind of job came out of Syracuse. So that was real cool getting to see all that."
Another important part of the visit was spending time with some of the current Syracuse players. Kelly was hosted by Brandon Reddish, and enjoyed getting to know him.
"My host was Brandon Reddish," he said. "He was telling me that if I come here, it's a family. Whenever anything happens, the boys are going to be there and have your back. They're going to have it for you.
"Everybody's going to have your back and be there for each other. You'll never be on your own in any way."
After the trip, Kelly admittedly has a lot to think about. He has two offers from Marshall and Syracuse, and wants to decide soon so that the process can end. Kelly will then be able to focus on getting ready for the next level.
"I don't know if I want to give it a time frame," Kelly said. "Hopefully real soon."
