Offensive Coordinator Hot Board 2.2

The Syracuse offensive coordinator search is in full swing. CuseNation.com has a list of updated candidates inside.

The search for a new offensive coordinator is moving along quickly. CuseNation.com has learned that the new coach will be someone outside of the current staff. It also could be someone that Nathaniel Hackett has worked with in the past.

Here is a look at an updated candidate list:

Alex Van Pelt
Current Position:
Running backs coach Green Bay Packers
Age:
42
Notable:
Van Pelt worked with Hackett with the Buffalo Bills in 2009. During their time together, he gave Hackett a copy of the K-Gun offensive playbook the Bills used in the early-to-mid 90's. That playbook was the inspiration to the up-tempo, spread offense Syracuse used in 2012. Van Pelt has been an NFL assistant since 2006 with the Bills, Buccaneers, and Packers.

While he only has one year of college experience (QB coach at University of Buffalo in 2005), he has an extensive knowledge of the Orange offensive system. Van Pelt also has experience calling plays as the Bills offensive coordinator in 2009.

Bio:

Jeff Jagodzinski
Current Position:
Offensive coordinator Georgia State University
Age:
49
Notable:
Jagodzinski worked with Nathaniel Hackett with the Tampe Bay Buccaneers in 2008. He has extensive experience as an offensive assistant in the NFL and college. Jags was also a head coach with Boston College for two seasons, compiling a 20-8 record. He has experience as an offensive coordinator with B.C. in the late 90's.

Jags brings college and NFL experience, as well as knowledge of northeast recruiting from his time as a college coach. He is considered to have a good offensive mind, and could provide a seemless transition for Syracuse.

Bio:

Bill Cubit
Current Position:
Head coach Western Michigan University
Age:
59
Notable:
Cubit was an offensive coordinator and head coach for Western Michigan for several years. He also served as offensive coordinator at Missouir, Rutgers, and Stanford.

Cubit has worked with both Shafer and Hackett in the past, so there is a connection is there. He has run successful offenses for years with the Broncos. He reportedly accepted a position as offensive coordinator at Illinois a few days ago, but nothing official has been released. He was fired as head coach at WMU after the 2012 season.

Bio:

John Reagan
Current Position:
Offensive Coordinator Rice University
Age:
39
Notable:
Reagan has been an offensive coach for many years. He served on the Kansas staff for several years as the running game coordinator/offensive line coach. Prior to that, he spend time serving in various assistant roles at Oklahoma State, Penn, Akron, Albany, Temple, and Air Force.

After leaving Kansas, he joined the Rice staff in 2010. He has served as the offensive coordinator during the last two seasons. Regan has a Syracuse connection, playing for the Orange in the early 90's. He was the starting center in 1992 and 1993. Reagan runs a pistol veer scheme, very similar to a spread.

Bio:

David Walker
Current Position:
Running backs coach Indianapolis Colts
Age:
43
Notable:
David Walker is a former Syracuse running back that has had a lot of success as an assistant coach. Shortly after graduating, he became the running backs coach with the Orange where he stayed for ten seasons. After that, he coached at Pittsburg from 2005-2010.

Walker has spent the last two seasons as the running backs coach for the Indianapolis Colts. A return to his alma mater could be of interest to Walker, who has coached in primarily pro style systems. He also has experience recruiting in the northeast from his time coaching with the Orange and Panthers.

Bio:

Lincoln Riley
Current Position:
Offensive coordinator/Quarterbacks coach East Carolina University
Age:
29
Notable:
Riley is a young, up and coming coach with a good offensive mind. He has expereince running a very successful spread offense as the offensive coordinator at East Carolina for three seasons. He studied under Mike Leach and Dana Holgerson, and even was the playcaller at Texas Tech for their 41-31 victory over Michigan State in the 2010 Alamo Bowl.

Prior to taking the job at ECU, Riley had spent most of his life out west. He has experience calling plays and recruiting, but lacks some of the ties of more experienced candidates.

Bio:

Mark Whipple
Current Position:
Quarterbacks coach Cleveland Browns
Age:
55
Notable:
Whipple has extensive experience in the NFL and college. He was the head coach at UMass from 1998-2003. Over the last several years, he has been a QB coach with the Steelers, assistant with the Eagles, offensive coordinator with the Miami Hurricanes, and his current stint with the Browns.

Whipple has experience as a play caller and as a recruiter. His background would bring a lot of experience to the position, and he could be looking for a job with the Browns actively seeking a new head coach.

Bio:

Calvin Magee
Current Position:
Offensive coordinator University of Arizona
Age:
44
Notable:
Magee has extensive experience in successful spread systems. He also has northeast recruiting experience from his time as offensive coordinator at West Virginia and Pittsburgh. Magee served as offensive coordinator at Michigan at the same time Scott Shafer was there.

However, Magee has followed Rich Rodriguez as his offensive coordinator for years, and could be hard to pluck from his staff. Shafer would have to pull a few strings for this to happen, but would be a great choice for the Orange.
