Allen Discusses Decision to Wear Orange

Syracuse threw another name into the quarterback battle as Drew Allen decided to transfer in from Oklahoma. He discusses at length the process, why he chose the Orange, his ability to use his legs to hurt opposing defenses, and more inside.

The quarterback battle is the most intense battle of spring practice. The same will be true headed into fall camp as head coach Scott Shafer looks to replace Ryan Nassib. One more name will be thrown into the mix as former Oklahoma quarterback Drew Allen has decided to transfer to Syracuse.

It was a long process for Allen, and one he kept very close to the vest. But his decision is over, and he knows he made the right one.

"This was such a long process ever since I made the decision in January to transfer," Allen admitted. "It is a relief but I don't really see it as a relief but more of a good decision. I actually see it as a great decision. That I did take so long to make the decision really speaks to the Syracuse coaches and program. I had other great schools to choose from but I chose Syracuse. It makes it more of a great decision in my books. I'm just really excited about it."

When the former 3-star quarterback visited the Orange campus, several things stood out. The thing that attracted him the most was the offensive scheme and his interactions with the coaching staff. They made him feel like it was the right fit.

"I really enjoyed practice," Allen recalled. "I liked Coach (Tim) Lester, the quarterbacks coach. I really enjoyed watching Coach (George) McDonald, the offensive coordinator, coach those guys. I liked the way he ran his offense and what they told me they were going to do on offense and how they said they were going to utilize their quarterback. Whoever would start. Seeing that and seeing how great those guys are. Everyone on the coaching staff.

"Coach (Scott) Shafer is going to be an amazing head coach and I wanted to be a part of it. I put my faith and trust in those guys. Just the visit, it really helped me at the end and was a really big part of my decision because I really enjoyed the town of Syracuse. Where that program is headed, I wanted to be a part of it."

Another part of the visit that was important to Allen was spending time with the players. They were able to give him insights into the program that can only come from current players.

"I got to hang out with Jarrod West, the wide receiver, who was my player host," Allen explained. "I got to hang out with the running back Jerome (Smith). Those guys just told me that with Ryan (Nassib) the last few years they had success. They're on the brink of being great. They told me they came to Syracuse because they wanted to be part of something great. Be a part of championships.

"I know they got a taste of that last year in the Big East and they want to make a run this year at the ACC Championship. They really spoke highly of Coach Shafer. The relationship they already have with the guys there since they've come in as coaches. Being there and getting first hand knowledge from those guys was really key for me."

The scheme is what attracted Allen to Syracuse the most. He believes what George McDonald is putting in will allow the Orange to be very successful in the ACC.

"The offensive scheme that Coach McDonald is putting is," Allen said of his interest in Syracuse. "I know he's a first year guy. The availability of me being able to go in there and compete for the starting job. The direction that he wants to go in as far as being able to work with the quarterback and be on the same page, that really spoke to me. That really attracted me. It seemed like the offensive scheme and the offense that Coach McDonald is going to be running suits me well.

"Since it is a unique situation and I only have one year left. I really enjoyed the practices and seeing who they have coming back. The defense looks really good personnel wise. I really liked how the defensive coordinator used his scheme. It seems like they're going to be very affective in the ACC. The offensive line has three guys coming back. They've got some other guys that are going to step up. I wanted to be a part of it. I'd love those guys protecting me if I were to win the job. The main thing is the opportunity to go in there and win the job. That's all I could ask for."

The most important thing for Allen was making sure his family was happy with the decision. He says the support of his parents has been very important, and that everyone supports his choice.

"I woke up this morning more excited than I was last night," Allen announced. "I knew it was the right decision for me. My family couldn't be happier. No matter what I would've done, when it came down to it, the schools I had to choose from I was just so fortunate and blessed to be in this position. The schools that wanted me I couldn't be anymore pleased and blessed.

"As far as my family goes, it is a big move for me. But it is very important for me but it's very important and big for my family. They couldn't be happier. I got a very big family that is headed by my two amazing parents who have always been there for me. If it wasn't for them I don't know what I'd be doing today. I wouldn't be the same person I am. I thank them so much for everything they've done. They were more than excited."

After considering his options, Allen had made a final decision. Syracuse was going to be his destination for his final season at the college level. He called Scott Shafer, who was obviously very excited.

"I called Coach Shafer, the head coach of course," Allen said. "We've had a great relationship through this all. He's a great man and a great family man. He's a great coach so I was pleased that I was able to call him and tell him the good news. That I was ready to commit to the Orange. He was very excited. Just for him to be interested in me coming in and competing, I was very honored and flattered because he's such a great coach.

"He went and passed the phone off to almost every coach there. That was just the icing on the cake that I picked the right school. To have every coach, both offensive and defensive, be that excited was great."

Now focused on getting integrated into the Syracuse program, Allen knows he has challenges ahead. He has confidence, however, that he can learn quickly.

"This whole situation of one year, I knew no matter where I went there would be a challenge," Allen declared. "The main thing I kind of focused on was my four years here at Oklahoma, I gained a lot of knowledge. I had to learn a whole brand new offense and how the Big-12 kind of worked physically and stuff like that. Moving to the ACC, I'm going to have to adapt to how those guys, what kind of defensive schemes they usually play.

"But as far as offense, the thing I kind of focused on was that there was going to be carry over with the offense from Oklahoma. Basically the only thing that's really going to be a big difference is the terminology and the lingo. Basically, football is football. The type of style that most teams are trying to run now, everything's based on the concepts. So if the concepts are the same, the terminology is different. I'm looking forward to learning it, and I have all the confidence in the world that I'll catch on quick."

One of the questions regarding Allen is whether he can hurt defenses with his legs. The new Syracuse staff wants an up-tempo offensive system with a mobile quarterback. Allen says he can run when needed.

"It was four years ago or five years ago when I was in high school," Allen said. "I ran the ball quite a bit in high school and broke off a few big runs. Me as a quarterback, my strengths are my ability to be that leader that everybody needs and wants. The way I would like for myself to be perceived as is a very good game manager and a good leader, obviously.

"In terms of running the football, I'm a pass first quarterback. There's no doubt. But it is nice that I am blessed with a little bit of speed. I was clocked in the 4.6's recently playing at 230 or 235. So I can get out if the pocket breaks down. Basically Coach Shafer said he's looking for not a quarterback to run the football but to be able to move the chains with his feet if need be and I feel like I can definitely do that. I like to run the football but it's not unless I have. I'm going to go through my reads and progressions. I'm not going to be one of these guys that makes one read and takes off."
