Syracuse has been recruiting four star offensive lineman Chad Mavety very hard for some time. He's been the top target on their board for months. They were one of several schools on the Nassau Community College campus to watch him practice.
"It was Coach (Rob) Moore," Mavety recalled. "He came down and it was great to see him. He can't wait to get myself up there, my defensive tackle (Lance McDowell), and my running back (Travis Lock). We can't wait to go up and check it out to see what Syracuse is all about.
"I'm at the top of their board. Syracuse really wants me. I'm the starting left tackle for Syracuse if I come there. He hasn't pressure me or anything but he just tells me it was a good place. I've heard about the new $17 million indoor practice facility they're building. Stuff like that."
Mavety still has not taken a visit to take in the Syracuse campus. But that could be coming somewhat soon. Given the short distance from Nassau, he has an open invitation from the Orange coaches.
"I can come up whenever I want," Mavety claimed. "I could come up any day because it's local. It's not too far, just a couple hours. I know I am welcome anytime to come up and hang out with the coaches. I'm thinking as soon as my semester ends. It's local so I don't have to drive far. I'll definitely get up there."
Recently, the Syracuse staff sent Mavety a document that showed the past, present, and future, with Mavety being the future. He tweeted out a picture and said that meant a lot to him.
"That was cool," Mavety admitted. "That's what I want with whatever school I go to. I want to be the face of the future. I want to be that guy that everybody looks at as a leader. That's just my goal."
Syracuse wasn't the only school visiting Mavety on Thursday. He spoke with several coaches and enjoyed his time with each.
Mavety is coveted by dozens of schools, including many of college football's elite. He is still not close to a decision and maintains he is wide open. He could start trimming his list within the next couple of months, however.
"It's still open," Mavety explained. "I like all the coaches that came by. I like them all a lot. I can't really say that anything's changed as far as recruiting right now. Not just yet.
"I'm still pretty wide open. I love Syracuse. I love Florida State. I love Alabama and Ohio State. I love Tennessee. There's a bunch of schools out there that I really like right now. So I've got to start really trimming it down. Maybe by the start of the summer."
