Syracuse is after some talented prospects in Pennsylvania. With one already in the fold, they are looking setting their sights on a talented athlete in Jamal Custis who has the versatility to play tight end or wide receiver.
"Well about three weeks ago, the defensive coordinator (Chuck Bullough) came down to visit," Custis recalled. "He was telling my coach that they were interested in me. They had seen my tape and were going to go back and evaluate, then they'd get back to me. I kind of though they would offer me soon. They called my coach and told him they would be coming in soon. Last week they told my coach that they had offered.
"They actually came to my practice during my first mini-camp later on that day and I didn't even know. He was just watching me play a little bit. And he just really liked me. They think I'm a good player and offered me a scholarship."
Custis was excited to add Syracuse to his offer list which contains mostly regional schools. The Newman-Goretti standout says the Orange are a program that's always been on his radar.
"I was honored," Custis admitted. "Syracuse is a good football school and has a good football team. They have a good tradition so I was honored. I like that they've shown a lot of interest in me. I'm really appreciative of that.
"I'm learning more about them. They play in the ACC so that's good competition. I heard they pass the ball a lot so I could fit in pretty well with them. The QB there left and went into the NFL. He was from the area and they pass a lot. I think they could get me the ball and have good playmakers, so I like to hear that.
"I've always liked to hear about Syracuse," Custis continued. "Their basketball program is good but their football program is good to. ACC football is good competition, so that's why I'm interested in Syracuse."
In order to help him make a decision, the 3-star prospect will be taking several visits over the summer.
"After school lets out, I'm going to be taking visits to schools," Custis claimed. "Syracuse will be one of them maybe in late June or early July. I'm going to try to schedule a visit up there. I've just got to talk to the coach. But I'm definitely going to try to get up there.
"I also want to visit Pittsburgh, Rutgers, and Virginia. They're in the works right now. I'm trying to plan it all out. I'm actually going to a camp in June so I'm going to see if I can schedule it all in one trip. But definitely this summer I'm going to try to get these visits done."
Before he starts taking trips, Custis maintains he has no early favorites. After he is done with his summer plans, he could trim his list or even make a final decision.
"Right now, I don't really have a favorite," Custis explained. "I like all the schools that are coming at me. I'm basically new to this. I'm just taking it all in. I'm getting to learn more about these schools.
"Syracuse, Rutgers and Pitt and Virginia are showing a lot of interest in me. I've been talking to all of the coaches. I'm just learning about all of the schools right now. After these visits I'm going to have a good idea of what couple schools I'm leaning towards. I'm going to get on these campuses and talk to all of the coaches and see where things stand."
