"Pretty much that was my first offer," McDowell admitted. "That was the first school that showed they believed in me. I also like the coaches there. But that's pretty much why Syracuse is in my top ten."
McDowell has been busy this summer taking visits to a bunch of schools. One he has not visited is Syracuse. He is trying to change that, however.
"Yeah I'm trying," the four star safety said. "I just have to find a day that will be good for me and the school. I want to try to get it in before I go back to school. But if not, I'll try to make that into an official."
Regardless of the lack of a visit and stiff competition, McDowell says Syracuse has as good of a chance as any on his list to pick up a commitment from the 6-foot-2 safety .
"They're in a good spot," McDowell explained. "Every school has a good shot to land me. We'll just have to see where I end up. Each school on my list has a good shot to get me."
On the down side for Syracuse fans, McDowell has not been in contact within the last month with the Orange. However, he plans to reach out to them soon to reestablish that line of communication.
"I really haven't talked to them lately," McDowell claimed. "I've been busy a lot lately. I really haven't talked to them since they came down to my school in May. But I'm going to reach out and try to get back in touch."
With his list trimmed to ten schools, McDowell still isn't sure when he make a final decision. He will, however, cut his list further before he commits.
"I'm not really sure when I'll decide," McDowell described. "The earliest is August 2nd, the latest is signing day. I'll probably cut it down to a top five first. I'm not sure when I'm going to do that yet."
