The Orange are losing C.J. Fair after the upcoming season, and Jerami Grant is a candidate to potentially leave early. So the staff is looking towards the future to continue bringing in talented wings that thrive in the Syracuse system.
Malachi Richardson is not a new target of the Orange. Mike Hopkins has been recruiting him for some time. The offer finally came for Richardson, who says he has a solid relationship with Syracuse's coach in waiting.
"Coach Hopkins offered me," the 6-foot-5 prospect recalled. "He said Coach B (Jim Boeheim) loved my game and that I now had a ‘Cuse offer. I was pretty surprised because I'd been waiting so long for the official offer. I'm really excited.
"They're high on my list now that they finally did offer. I'm going to visit sometime this basketball season."
Richardson attended the same high school as Tyler Roberson last season (Roselle Catholic in New Jersey), though he is transferring for the upcoming year. Roberson said he and Richardson have discussed the Orange before, and that his interest is real.
When Richardson visits, Roberson plans to get in touch with his former teammate to help recruit him to Syracuse.
Roberson also admits that Richardson would be a great fit within the Orange system
"Yeah he's very talented," Roberson said.
But Syracuse is not the only school that has taken notice of his ability. Several other big time programs are after Richardson's services, which has led to an uncertain time frame for any type of decision.
Richardson is currently ranked as the number three small forward in the 2015 class.
