Even with Ervin Philips' commitment, Syracuse is still looking to add a running back to the 2014 class. Ish Witter is seemingly off the radar, so the Orange have moved to other talented prospects. One of those is a three star running back Tommy Mister out of St. Rita High School in Chicago (Ill.) who is currently committed to Iowa State. He was contacted by a member of the Syracuse staff recently.
"Coach (DeAndre) Smith," Mister said. "He had called and asked me how things were going. He came and saw me and (Syracuse commit) Lamar Dawson play last Friday night. They were talking to me before I committed but never got around to offering me. He told me that they still have interest in me and love the way I play.
"He talked to me about how strong my commitment to Iowa State was. Do I see myself decommitting and stuff like that. I could tell he really wanted to offer me but he didn't want to if I was just going to stay at Iowa State. He said he's just going to keep in contact with me and I'm going to really give them a serious look."
Syracuse isn't the only school that is trying to poach the Iowa State commit. But there is something about the Orange that makes them standout a bit.
"I've been talking to some other schools," Mister said. "Like Indiana, Illinois, Virginia and a couple more. So it's really nothing new. But the fact that I've got a teammate, Lamar Dawson is going to Syracuse. Me being with him every day, he's talking up Syracuse and trying to get me to go there and everything. That's probably the main thing is that Lamar is there and he's talking to me about Syracuse every day.
"He says they just moved to the ACC. They have a lot of great talent that's coming there since they moved to the ACC. He's always talking about how early he would play and how early I would play if we went there. How we could help turn the program around and how awesome it is down there at Syracuse. How awesome the coaching staff is and the other commits. He's always talking about stuff like that. He tells me the fan base is crazy and I can see that from Twitter."
The key for Syracuse is getting Mister on campus for a visit. He has already spoke to his parents about the possibility as he considers his options going forward.
"I talked to my dad and my mom about it the other day," Mister said. "They said they want me to give Syracuse a serious look. I might be talking to coach Smith to set up an official. I don't know yet but I will seriously give them a really good look.
"Lamar asked me if I wanted to take an official and I said yeah. Whenever he sets up his I will probably take mine if I do take one. That's something we've touched base on."
So do the Orange have a real shot with the 6-foot-1 running back?
"I am committed right now," Mister said. "But if I go down to Syracuse and I like what I see, you never know."
