Recruiting Weekend Primer

Syracuse is hosting several committed and uncommitted prospects this weekend when the Orange face Clemson. It will be a critical weekend that will have a big influence on the rest of their 2014 class. CuseNation.com breaks it all down inside.

While Syracuse has arguably the biggest game on its schedule on Saturday, off the field the Orange have an important recruiting weekend ahead. Several commits will on campus to check out what could be the best Dome atmosphere this year, as well as some important targets that could make their decision based on the trip. It gives Syracuse a chance to make an impression on some key targets as well as solidify their status with the commits.

Uncommitted Prospects

Aaron Roberts
Position: Offensive Guard
School: De La Salle Institute (Chicago, Ill.)
Class: 2014
Rating:
Visit Type: Official
The Latest: Roberts has been down to Syracuse and Illinois for some time. However, he put the in-state school onto the backburner several weeks ago. The Orange were now in the driver's seat for Roberts. However, Oklahoma has started ramping up their interest of late. They told Roberts they would attend his home game on 9/20, but ended up not making it. Still, they have continued to stay in touch. Syracuse is the heavy favorite here.

Beau Benzschawel
Position: Offensive Tackle
School: Grafton High School (Grafton, Wisc.)
Class: 2014
Rating:
Visit Type: Unofficial
The Latest: When Iowa State pulled there offer, Syracuse was the only school on Benzschawel's radar. Still, he wants to make sure it is the right fit. This visit will go a long ways towards deciding that. If things go well on the trip, he could decide to pull the trigger. However, there are some rumblings that he could be a backup plan to other targets on the radar. Maybe the staff wants to see where things go with Chad Mavety before accepting his pledge? Hard to say. But it is possible that the three star prospect's commitment isn't accepted by the staff on this trip.

Mike Johnson
Position: Cornerback
School: Countryside High School (Clearwater, Fla.)
Class: 2014
Rating:
Visit Type: Unofficial
The Latest:Johnson is still on the fence about visiting Syracuse this weekend. If he does, it will be as an unofficial. He is looking to take his brother with him on the trip. Does Syracuse want another corner in the 2014 class to join Lamar Dawson? At least one more. With Deion Hallmon's recent decommitment, it puts him back in the forefront. Where does Johnson fall in? It's hard to pass up on a Florida athlete that runs a 4.4. Regardless of Hallmon, Syracuse will go after Johnson who they view as an elite athlete. The staff is really, really excited about Johnson as a prospect and are thrilled to have him up on an unofficial.

Kadeem Smith

Devine Ozigbo
Position: Running Back
School: Sachse High School (Sachse, Texas)
Class: 2015
Rating: None
Visit Type: Unofficial
The Latest: One of the most talented 2015 prospects in a talent rich state, Ozigbo has ties to Syracuse and the northeast. He will be in attendance but it is unclear where the staff stands with him. Still, getting someone from Texas to take an unofficial to Syracuse is big for the Orange. He doesn't have an offer and isn't likely to pick one up on the trip. Visit Commitment Probability: 0%

Chad Mavety
Position: Offensive Tackle
School: Nassau Community College (Garden City, N.Y.)
Class: 2014
Rating:
Visit Type: Unofficial
The Latest: Syracuse is still on the outside looking in for the talented offensive tackle. But getting him on campus is big for the Orange. He grew up as a Syracuse fan and dreamed of playing for them. Having him on campus for the biggest game of the year could bring up some nostalgic thoughts to put Syracuse back in the mix. He isn't 100% on coming, but said, "I'm trying to make it up there."

A.J. Long
Position: Quarterback
School: Friendship Christian School (Lebanon, Tenn.)
Class: 2014
Rating:
Visit Type: Unofficial
The Latest: Long is taking this trip for three reasons. It's a chance to take in the game day atmosphere at the Dome. More importantly, Long is there to help Syracuse recruit the uncommitted prospects on campus. Thirdly, Long is there to help try to secure Cabinda in the wake of his offer from Penn State. For Syracuse fans, there's not a better guy to be leading these charges.

Jason Cabinda
Position: Linebacker
School: Hunterdon Central School (Flemington, N.J.)
Class: 2014
Rating:
Visit Type: Unofficial
The Latest: Cabinda's recent offer from Penn State has put his status in a state of flux. While he still says he is "100% ‘Cuse," he is also giving the offer a serious look. This weekend is a chance to for Syracuse to solidify their position with the three star prospect. It could go a long way to where he ends up if things go well. Especially with a potential raucous crowd and a good performance by the Orange on the field. This may be the most important of any of the visitors on this weekend.

K.J. Williams
Position: Wide Receiver
School: Liberty High School (Bethlehem, Pa.)
Class: 2014
Rating:
Visit Type: N/A
The Latest: Williams was originally planning to go, but has SATs on Saturday morning. Therefore he is unable to make it. While he isn't thrilled about that, he will be watching on television. Still, Williams is solid to Syracuse and Orange fans shouldn't worry at this point.

Naesean Howard
Position: Safety
School: West Genesee High School (Syracuse, N.Y.)
Class: 2014
Rating:
Visit Type: Unofficial
The Latest: Howard has been to each Syracuse home game so far this season and will be attending again when the Orange face Clemson. That's not a surprise being less than fifteen minutes from the campus. Howard has grown up a Syracuse fan and loves going to the Dome. He will be helping the Orange recruit as well.

Rodney Williams
Position: Safety
School: Cherry Hill High-West High School (Cherry Hill, N.J.)
Class: 2014
