Orange Madness at Syracuse generally features elite recruits visiting to check out the event. The 2013 version was no different. One of the prospects on campus was 2015 four star Fairfax (Va.) Paul VI High guard Franklin Howard.
"It was great," Howard said. "I had a good time. I got to spend some time with the team and watch them practice. Orange madness was good. I got to spend some time with the coaches. It was good.
"I liked the scrimmage. I liked their style of play. How they got up and down the floor and played together. I liked the dunk contest. I actually thought Jerami was going to be in it, so I was a little surprised. I like (Rakeem) Christmas a little better though."
While on the Syracuse campus, Howard was able to spend time speaking with head coach Jim Boeheim.
"We talked about how I fit in with Syracuse," Howard said. "Just what they see for me in the future. We actually talked about an offer. It's funny because I came down and I didn't know they offered me. They said I was supposed to be told a while back but I just asked them while I was there. Coach Boeheim officially told me I had an offer.
"I was kind of excited. Syracuse is definitely going to be one of the tops on my list. I was excited especially coming from the head coach. A hall of fame coach likes my game and wants me to come play for him. That's cool."
One of Howard's favorite players is former Orange star Michael Carter-Williams who is currently a member of the Philadelphia 76ers. Being able to play for the same school as Carter-Williams is one of the things that stands out about Syracuse.
"It would be big because I know I could follow in his footsteps," Howard said. "Even go the same road as he did or even better. Coach (Boeheim) does have experience with big guards. So it's been done. It seems like they can do it and teach you to be a great guard. They let you run the team."
Howard is now looking to focus on his recruitment. He says he could be closing in on a decision in the near future.
"I'm actually starting to cut down a little bit," Howard said. "It's starting to come where I'm having a good feel where I want to be. Me and my family are discussing it. I honestly don't have a time table for it, but I have a feeling it could be pretty soon. It's whenever I feel the time is right."
Howard added that he is looking at a possible visit to Syracuse when they take on Duke in early February.
