Officials will be big for Rodney

Zeek Rodney picked up a new offer from Wake Forest recently. He also participated in the Shrine Bowl. He discusses both, as well as interest from Syracuse and other schools, inside.

Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe defensive tackle Zeek Rodney is considered one of the best players in South Carolina. He is viewed so highly that he participated in an annual Shrine Bowl game that pits the best from his state against the best from North Carolina.

"I met some of the top players from my state of South Carolina and some from North Carolina," Rodney said. "I practiced with them and got to go against some good offensive linemen. I feel like after practicing with them I became a better player that week.

"Then in the game, I became a better player. Just working on my technique and playing against that competition. But I enjoyed myself. It was a good experience."

Recently, Rodney had a new school start showing interest. That was Wake Forest, who's new coaching staff offered the 6-foot-1 defensive tackle prospect.

"Before that Monday's practice, my head coach had called," Rodney said. "I wasn't able to answer so he texted me that the head coach at Wake Forest wants to speak with me. He said he had been left me messages on my Facebook and Twitter. He left his number so I called him. He said he liked my tape and that they were a new coaching staff there from Bowling Green I think.

"He said he was offering me a scholarship there and scheduled a visit for the 24th of this month. It's not a big deal that they're closer to home, but at the same time they are closer to home and it's the ACC. Their academics are in the top 25 according to their coach."

Before Rodney visits Wake Forest, he is taking an official to Syracuse. The Orange have been heavily involved with the South Pointe standout as one of their top priorities in the 2014 class.

"I don't really have a top but I do like Syracuse a lot," Rodney said. "I have my visit the week before I go to Wake. I like them a lot. I talk to (defensive line) coach (Tim) Daoust a lot. I talk to the head coach a lot. I hope I have a good time up there. I'm looking forward to the visit and checking things out.

"After my visit to Wake, I'll make my decision a couple of days after that."

Rodney added that in addition to Wake Forest and Syracuse, he is considering Marshall and Charlotte. Rodney has visited both schools already.
