Pinson (Ala.) Clay-Chalkville defensive tackle Jalen Harvey wasn't expecting an offer from Syracuse. The Orange had not been involved with him throughout the process. Then, Sunday afternoon, his phone rang.
"I was outside and I saw this random number come up on my phone," Harvey said. "I saw the number calling and I didn't know who it was. I picked up the phone and it was a coach from Syracuse.
"He said they were watching my film and liked what they saw. I really like Syracuse so I was pretty excited when they told me I had the offer."
Despite not being involved with Syracuse until late, Harvey's interest is very high. He has a quasi-connection to the program in some players he looks up to and models his game after.
"Three of my favorite players went to Syracuse," Harvey said. "Dwight Freeney, Art Jones and Chandler Jones. All of them went there. I'm a big basketball fan. I watch a lot of basketball too so I know about Syracuse. My favorite player is C.J. Fair.
"It would be an honor to go to the same school that they went to. Try to live up to the legacy of what they did there. I would love to have the chance to be as great as them."
It was defensive line coach Tim Daoust that gave Harvey that call to extend the offer. The two spoke on the phone for a significant amount of time which helped Harvey learn about the program.
"We already talked about a lot," Harvey said. "We talked for a long time. He said that he coaches guys hard and tries to get the most out of them. He said out of all the schools in the country they were the only one to not give up a 100-yard rusher the whole year.
"He had the chance to coach Chandler and that he was a hard worker. He talked about the program and how they're on the rise. He pretty much told me everything already and answered my questions."
With the new offer, Harvey is taking a serious look at the Orange. He will be taking an official visit this coming weekend, just a few days before signing day. Currently committed to Western Kentucky, could the visit cause him to flip his decision?
"If the visit goes well, there's no telling what I would do," Harvey said. "I've just got to get up there and find out."
