The Syracuse coaching staff was satisfied with their 2014 class, but still wanted to add some quality depth. As they looked for potential preferred walk-ons, they reached out to IMG Academy head coach Chris Weinke about one of his offensive lineman.
Originally from Georgia but moved to Florida to play at IMG, 6-foot-2, 315-pound center Donnie Foster suddenly had a major conference college football team pursuing him.
After going through the recruiting process without a BCS conference offer, Foster spoke to Syracuse quarterbacks coach Tim Lester about a preferred walk-on opportunity.
"He got my film and took it up there," Foster said. "The coaches really liked it and it went from there. I've always wanted to stay on a big time conference like the ACC. Syracuse has always been a school that I've watched growing up.
"Seeing the traditions that they have there, I thought it was something special. When they offered the opportunity and with the situation along the offensive line, I thought if was a great place for me to come in."
The Syracuse coaches let Foster know there is an opportunity to earn a scholarship should he perform well within the program. Foster will be arriving in Syracuse on Wednesday and visiting through Sunday.
Foster said there is a very strong chance he make it official during his visit if things go well. The addition of Foster would give the Orange more depth up front without using up another scholarship.
