Plant City (Fla.) High linebacker Sawyer Dawson has had a few BCS offers in his pocket, but picked up another earlier this week. Syracuse stopped by his school to evaluate him in person and extended the offer.
"I was pretty excited," Dawson said. "It's probably, I would say, my biggest offer. I was really excited about that because they're in the ACC conference. They came to my school and talked to my coach for a little bit then called him later.
"They said I have an offer and he talked to their linebackers coach, coach Lea. They really like my athleticism and how big I am to move the way I do. They want me to play the field side linebacker position for them. They think I'm a good fit there."
"For me, the impression is good so far," Dawson said. "Coach Lea seems like a good coach and a really good person. I like everybody so far."
Dawson wants to learn more about Syracuse and is excited about doing so.
"I like Syracuse," Dawson said. "I'm pretty interested in them right now. I know a little bit about them but not a lot. It is far away but that's something I really don't care about as far as how far away it is from home."
Another critical part of the process is checking out the campus in person. The Plant City High standout plans on taking the trip to Central New York soon.
"I'm probably going to visit up there this summer," Dawson said. "I really want to meet the coaches and see how they are. See if I really like their staff. Of course I'm going to check out the facilities and stuff.
"It would probably be too early (to commit). I want to wait out the process and see all of my options. Just so I really know what I like."
As Dawson learns more about Syracuse to find out if they are the right fit, it will be his relationship with the staff that determines where the Orange ultimately stand in his recruitment.
"The coaches are the most important," Dawson said. "I want to go to a place where I feel like I'm at home. The coaches are really going to be good leaders for me on and off the field."
