Reed sees depth in the secondary

Syracuse assistant Fred Reed breaks down the depth and development of the secondary inside.

Syracuse defensive backs coach Fred Reed sees plenty of depth at corner and safety on the 2014 roster. He is pleased with their development in camp thus far. Coach Reed breaks it all down below.

On replacing starting corners from last season: “They’re (Brandon and Julian), so far in camp, are doing a really good job for us. We still have to get better at the little things and work on the details. But they’re making progress and I’m pleased with how they’re doing.”

On Wayne Morgan and the freshmen: “Well Wayne is doing a really good job. I think he’s doing a good enough job to really challenge the other two guys. We’ve got some competition going on. I think he’s having a really good camp so far. It’s early so we will see how the freshmen develop. We’re pleased with the three freshmen that we have at corner. We’ll have to see how they develop. It’s a long process for those guys.”

On the freshmen picking things up: “They’re pretty smart. I’m pleased with their ability to pick up our system. They’ve been really good in the meeting rooms. Bright eyed and learning our system. They’ve been able to carry it out on the field and not make a lot of mistakes. We still have to work on some technical aspects of the game. But I think they’re picking it up pretty good.”

On Juwan Dowels: “The one thing about Juwan is that he’s a really smart football player. He’s played against some good competition so he’s not afraid to line up against guys that play college football. So I don’t think the stage is too big for him or the lights are too bright. So those are two things that about Juwan that I really like. We’ll just see how he continues to develop.”

On the safety position: “He’s (Durell) done a nice job. We’ve got Ritchy Desir as well who’s done a really good job over the summer and Darius Kelly as well in terms of their leadership. But there’s no question that Durell has been a leader with his performance and in the locker room as well. But I expect big things out of Ritchy and especially Darius. Darius has had a really good camp so far. That’s a testament to what he’s done during the spring. Those are the primary guys right now. We’ll see how it shakes itself out. I’m pleased with how they’re performing so far.

On having depth: “With the way the game is these days you have to have depth. You have to play guys. We’re going to play a number of people. Those two guys are definitely going to be in the mix. Chauncey Scissum has done a nice job. Chauncey had a pretty good spring learning the position for the first time. He’s continuing to take strides here and there in fall camp and doing a little bit better every day.”
