Moyer picks Syracuse
Matthew Moyer, a junior out of Gahana (Ohio) Lincoln, made a verbal commitment to Syracuse on Friday. Moyer informed Scout.com of his decision. “First of all it’s definitely a good fit,” Moyer told Scout.com. “I’m very long, lanky, athletic and very versatile. I can bring the ball up the floor if you need me to and I can post up if you need me to. I’m a prototypical Syracuse player and I just fit their mold.” Moyer, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward, picked up a scholarship from Syracuse on Wednesday during an unofficial visit to their campus. Heading into the visit he wasn’t planning on committing, but that quickly changed. “You know to be honest with you, no,” Moyer said when asked if he knew he would be committing to Jim Boeheim shortly after his visit. “I talked with [Gerry McNamara] about it and said I could possibly commit soon. But I didn’t expect it to be that great. Of course the Carmelo Anthony practice facility is the bomb and the best out there that I’ve seen.” “Last year I took a lot, a whole lot of unofficial visits,” he added. “I experienced a lot of places. That’s one thing I’m so glad I did. If I hadn’t seen those other places I wouldn’t have committed this early.” Moyer had a strong list of suitors that included Butler, Florida, Ohio State, Xavier and a host of others. In the end, Moyer said Syracuse felt like home during his visit. He also cited Boeheim and McNamara, who was the lead recruiter, as reasons he opted to pull the trigger. “I got home from Syracuse and I just felt like it was the right place,” Moyer said. “I felt like there was no denying it." "The coaching staff is superb," he added. "One thing I love about the coaching staff in particular is definitely the balance. The balance is great. You have coach Boeheim. He’s this laid back, chill dude. Then you have G-Mac who is fired up and crazy and wants to get it done. I love the balance. I got a chance to spend quality time with them.” Moyer is Syracuse's first verbal commitment of the 2016 class.
