Gbinije Misses Season Opener

While Syracuse opened the 2014-15 campaign, top reserve Michael Gbinije sat on the bench in street clothes.

Versatile reserve Michael Gbinije, the primary backup at point guard, shooting guard and small forward, did not suit up for Syracuse during their season opening win against Kennesaw State. When the Orange emerged from the locker room just minutes before the opening tip, Gbinije was wearing jeans and a Syracuse hoodie while the rest of the team (sans DaJuan Coleman) were in uniform.

Syracuse basketball Director of Athletic Communications' Pete Moore stated prior to the start of Friday night's contest that head coach Jim Boeheim would address the issue at the conclusion of the game. During his post game press conference, Boeheim was brief and vague about the situation.

"He'll be back Sunday," Boeheim said, adding later that his absence was not due to injury. "We prepare for guys not being able to play every day."

This is the second consecutive season that a key Syracuse player surprisingly missed the opener. Jerami Grant, now with the Philadelphia 76ers, sat out game one last year in similar fashion.

Gbinije will be back with the Orange when they face Hampton on Sunday inside the Carrier Dome.
