Homestead (Fla.) South Dade linebacker Doyle Grimes was once committed to Syracuse, but had not seen the campus in person. Then, shortly after an official visit to Marshall, he decided to flip his decision to the Thundering Herd.
Over this past weekend, Grimes finally made it up to Central New York to see the program with his own eyes.
”My favorite part was taking a tour of the campus and all of that,” Grimes said. “Took a trip to the bookstore. It was just exploring the campus. I liked the facilities. They were real nice. They’ve got a good thing going on up there. I enjoyed my time up there.”
Grimes’ former teammate and current Syracuse freshman cornerback Antwan Cordy was his host for the trip. Grimes enjoyed being able to spend time with an old friend during his couple of days on campus.
”It was good hanging out with him,” Grimes said. “It was a good experience. I got to see my boy again so I loved that.”
Another highlight of the visit was seeing the Carrier Dome during a game. The men’s basketball team faced St. John’s on Saturday, and Grimes immediately noticed the rabid fan base.
”It was crazy,” Grimes said. “Like I said, I had a good experience. The fans were really into it. They’re diehard out there.”
On Sunday, Grimes had some one-on-one time with Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer.
”We talked about a lot of things,” Grimes said. “He was asking me what I thought of the facilities and the school and things like that. He asked what other schools I’m looking at. He’s a great guy. Coach Shafer is a great guy.”
The visit went well for Grimes, who valued the opportunity to see the school and the football program in person. Despite that, he says his commitment status has not changed.
”I mean is everything is pretty much the same as it has been,” Grimes said. “I’m still committed to Marshall. It was a visit and a chance to check out the campus and meet the coaches. Right now I’m just committed to Marshall.
”I’m not saying Syracuse is out of the picture. They’re stil recruiting me. So as long as they’re still interested in me, I’m going to be interested in them.”
When will Grimes make his final decision and end his recruiting process, not allowing multiple schools to continue to pursue him?
”I guess everyone will find out on signing day,” Grimes said.
