George McDonald, who spent the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Syracuse, is moving on according to North Miami Beach head coach and close friend Jefd Bertani. After being demoted earlier this season in favor of Tim Lester, McDonald has accepted a position to coach wide receivers at North Carolina State.
The news of McDonald’s departure is not a surprise, given the in-season demotion. It would be hard to imagine staying given those circumstances. But the fact that he is leaving to go to an ACC rival that Syracuse plays every season is a bit of a shocker.
Syracuse has six players committed from Florida, McDonald’s primary recruiting grounds, in the 2015 class. They include offensive linemen Sam Clausman and Colin Byrne, defensive ends Keivonnis Davis and Dana Levine, cornerback Andrew Spence and kicker Sterling Hofrichter.
