Daryl Gross Out as Athletic Director

Daryl Gross is out as Athletic Director at Syracuse according to multiple sources.

Daryl Gross is out at Athletic Director at Syracuse, sources confirmed to CuseNation.com. The news was first reported by the Syracuse Media Group. CuseNation premium members have known for several weeks that Gross was likely out. According to the SMG, Dr. Gross will remain with the university in a different role.

That will likely only be through the fiscal year end (June 30th) as Gross is expected to look for a position at another institution. Chancellor Kent Syverud issued an e-mail both confirming the Gross news as well as his appointment of Pete Sala as the interim Athletic Director. Floyd Little will help counsel Sala for the time being.

The news comes in wake of the NCAA sanctions against Syracuse, most of which occurred under his leadership. He was not directly implicated by the NCAA ruling, but was part of a meeting of Syracuse officials that tried to get Fab Melo eligible. That situation ended up as part of the academic fraud cited in the report.

"As part of my discussions with him, Dr. Gross has asked to conclude his tenure as Director of Athletics and transition to a new role at the University that can benefit from his background and experience in the areas of marketing and advancement," Chancellor Kent Syverud said in a release. "He believes this transition will allow SU Athletics to move forward and position itself for continued future success. Effective today, Dr. Gross will serve as Vice President and Special Assistant to the Chancellor, and adjunct professor in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. Dr. Gross has embraced this opportunity and we look forward to his continued contributions.

"I have appointed Peter Sala, Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities and the Managing Director of the Carrier Dome, to serve as Interim Director of Athletics. I am grateful that Floyd Little, Special Assistant to the Athletics Director, has agreed to counsel and assist Peter through this term as Interim Director.

"Steve Ballentine, who is a Board of Trustees member and serves on the Board's Athletics Committee, will chair a small committee to assist the University in the search for a new Director of Athletics. This committee will include: Trustee Robert Miron, Chairman of the Board's Athletics Committee; Lavonda Reed, Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs; Interim Athletics Director Sala; Barry Wells, Special Assistant to the Chancellor; a representative head coach; faculty and student representatives; and a representative from the Office of University Counsel, which oversees Athletic Compliance. I will also be asking the committee to review and recommend organizational and structural changes with a focus on further enhancing the overall student-athlete experience including the possible creation of a new senior-level position to manage all department operations."

Gross has been the Athletic Director for 10 years. During his reign, Syracuse hired and fired Greg Robinson, retired the number 44 jersey, moved games to neutral sites in New Jersey, hired Doug Marrone and hired Scott Shafer after Marrone departed to the NFL.

Gross has also helped improve the performance of the Olympic sports at Syracuse. He is also behind the “New York’s College Team” branding moniker. He helped Syracuse transition into the ACC and with the funding of the new Indoor Practice Facility that is utilized by the football and lacrosse programs.

A search for a new Athletic Director is expected to start immediately.
