Simon High on Syracuse, Hopes for an Offer

Don Bosco standout Brandon Simon recaps his spring game visit to Syracuse and puts the Orange among his top schools despite not having an offer. Could one be on the horizon?

Ramsey (N.J.) Don Bosco defensive end Brandon Simon visited Syracuse on Saturday. He went to get a better feel for the program and work on his relationship with the Orange coaches.

He currently does not hold an offer, but hopes one comes down the road. Despite playing defensive end in high school, the Orange are looking at him at a different position.

”It was my first time at Syracuse,” Simon said. “It started off with a meeting. I met all the all of the coaches including coach Lea, the linebackers coach. They’re looking at me primarily at the linebacker position. Either inside linebacker or outside linebacker.

”Then they took us over to the spring game. The game was very intense. They got after it. I really enjoyed how they played. I enjoyed the visit overall.”

Given that Syracuse is looking at Simon at linebacker, that was the position group he focused on during the spring game. He noticed the athleticism and talent that group has, noting it looked like a strength of the defense.

”I was looking at the linebackers,” Simon said. “The linebackers were definitely good. They made a lot of players on the field. I definitely took notes. I could see myself playing that position.”

One of the highlights of the visit was spending some private time with linebackers coach Clark Lea. During their discussion, coach Lea outlined exactly where things stand with the 6-foot-3 prospect.

”When I met with coach Lea one-on-one, he said he really liked my game,” Simon said. “He said I’m an athlete. But at Don Bosco Prep, I play at defensive end. So I haven’t played linebacker yet. They’re looking at me for linebacker, so he wants me to come to the camp to see if I can play coverage and move my hips and stuff.”

Simon’s primary recruiter, Bobby Acosta, had a private conversation with him as well. The message was the same as coach Lea’s. That Syracuse wants him at linebacker and they want him to come camp over the summer. He also added that he will be visiting Simon at Don Bosco later this month.

”It was a great visit overall,” Simon said. “If I had to choose, it’s definitely a top three choice of mine. I love the coaching staff. I love coach Lea. The facilities and academics were great. They have a great business school and I want to major in business. They have a family atmosphere.”

Currently, Simon’s only offer is from Army. He is also hearing from Georgia Tech, Rutgers, Maryland, Boston College, Virginia, James Madison and Nebraska. Some like him at linebacker and some at defensive end.
