Battle Returns With Syracuse Watching

Tyus Battle returned to action over the weekend, this time for a new AAU squad. Syracuse was one of the schools in attendance.

Top 2016 target Tyus Battle returned to action yesterday in the Under Armour Assocation for New Heights (NYC). Battle scored 15 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out 3 assists in a blowout victory.

Yesterday, Syracuse assistant coach Adrian Autry was in attendance watching Battle. Today, Gerry McNamara has made the trip and is sitting courtside.

His recruitment is believed to be down to Michigan and Syracuse, with SU being the favorites. However, both UConn and Notre Dame were also in attendance over the weekend. The 5-star guard does have one more official visit left, but it is unlikely he will use it. He has previously visited Louisville, Duke, Michigan and Syracuse.

One thing that should bother Orange fans is Jim Boeheim isn’t sitting courtside. Syracuse has made Battle a priority for four years and everyday is crucial. If SU wanted to make a statement, Boeheim would follow Tyus around to show their commitment. But the NCAA sanctions limit Syracuse to only having two coaches on the road during the evaluation period. They have elected to not have Boeheim be one of those coaches at this time.

As most know, Syracuse currently doesn’t have room for Battle. With the scholarship reductions handed down by the NCAA, the Orange are limited to 10 scholarships per season for the next four years. Right now, including Matthew Moyer’s commitment, Syracuse is at 10 scholarships for the 2016-17 season. SU would need either an underclassman to leave school early, or regain a scholarship through appeal.

With the reported interest in 2015 PF Brodricks Jones, it appears the coaching staff is confident the appeal will be in their favor.
