On helping the offense make more plays
”I’m excited to make a lot of plays. I know our offense wasn’t too good last year, so they decided to give me the opportunity to get in the open field and make some things happen.”
On the importance of studying his assignments
”Making sure that I take everything down that they tell me. Writing every note down, every possible thing. Just getting it down and making sure I obtain all the information and study.”
Philips’ favorite part of the express back position
”I like getting out in the slot. We’re creating a lot of mismatches with linebackers and things like that. I like making the linebackers look kind of foolish.”
”We put in a lot of work in the summer. A lot. So we’re really connected. I know him, he knows me. He knows where I’m running my route. So we’re on the same page. There was a group. Me, Steve Ishmael, Sean Avant, Jamal Custis we were all out there. Running, after we run doing conditioning and getting extra work.”
Which freshmen are stepping up at express back?
”I’ve seen a lot from Dontae Strickland. I think he’s been doing really well. He’s taking in everything fast. He reminds me of myself, actually, when I was a freshman. Because he learns really fast and he’s doing a good job. As well as Tyrone Perkins.”
Philips’ weight goals
”Right now I’m at 184 (pounds). I’m trying to get up to at least 187 by the season. Just make sure I’m solid. The position I’m playing right now, there’s a lot of blocking so I’ve got to be fit.”
Philips on his speed
”I ran a 4.53 (40-time). I know I can get lower if I work on my technique. So by the time senior year comes, when I improve my technique, I’m sure I can get in the high 4.4’s.”
Will Philips contribute on special teams?
”I’m still going to be doing kick returns. I’m still going to be back there. I love being back there and I think that’s something I can really do good at.”
On the anticipation of playing games again
”I can’t wait. We’ve got a lot of things that other teams haven’t seen and they aren’t expecting. So I’m excited to get out there and surprise some people and play some games.”
What will Philips’ role be in 2015?
”They expanded my role. I’m getting more playing time right now. I’m at the h-back position. It’s a focal point in our offense. We get the ball a lot. We’ve got a lot of important blocks. So they’re leaning on me to do more this year.”
Philips on the offense this season
”We definitely have a lot to prove. We just want to take it one day at a time. We’ve got a healthy team right now, so the sky’s the limit.”
