It's only one week, but the Syracuse defense could not have had a better start to the 2015 campaign. Replacing eight starters, the Orange shutout Rhode Island and held them to just 64 total yards.
Those numbers have earned Syracuse the top rated defense in college football. Syracuse is number one in total yards allowed, with New Mexico, Miami (FL) and Boston College trailing them. Syracuse is also tied with five other schools having allowed zero points.
Syracuse is currently fifth in passing yards allowed with 60. They are second in rushing yards allowed with four. Rutgers held Norfolk State to negative three yards rushing in week one, good for tops in the nation.
With the youth on Syracuse defense and lack of experience all over the field, it was a very promising start. It will be difficult to stay at those rankings, especially as the competition improves. But for the season opener, it could not have gone much better and gives hope for this unit going forward.
